Job Summary
We are seeking to appoint a 1.0 Whole Time Equivalent Consultant as part of a team of three community consultants covering the South Somerset area (Yeovil East, Yeovil West and Chard). An established Associate specialist covers the South Somerset area supports this post (providing 0.5 WTE to this post). There are plans to increase Specialty doctor input to the Team in the future.
This post provides senior psychiatric input to the Yeovil West community mental health team, which is aligned to 5 of the 20 GP surgeries in the Yeovil area. The consultants work to a functional model following a community/inpatient split. The GP population catchment area for Yeovil West CMHT is 45,162 which is within Royal College recommendations.
The CMHT psychiatrists also provide medical input to the well-staffed Assertive Outreach Team (AOT). The Somerset Assertive Outreach service is expanding and recently merged with the Dual Diagnosis service. This Team has input from an experienced manger and a psychologist. The Dual Diagnosis service offers an intensive service to complex patients with significant substance use and associated risks and Yeovil has a designated lead who assesses, manages or offers a consultation for this patient group. The Dual Diagnosis lead is a Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP).
Our community mental health services have expanded across the Trust with concomitant expansion in staff as we have built up a new service called Open Mental Health, in the last 2 years. This service works closely with primary care, the wider community and the voluntary sector. This service includes psychologists, assistant psychologists, liaison staff, eating disorder leads and support workers. This staff body is linked in closely with CMHTs through team meetings and supervision. This affords greater skill mix and appropriate input for patients depending on risk level, diagnoses and previous mental health treatment. This gives many more options for patients referred to or being discharged from mental health services. Linked software and interface meetings ensure all referrals have a considered and appropriate offer with reduced repeated assessments. We are able to provide a more holistic service with greater satisfaction for staff and patients.
Other teams operating in the area are the South Somerset Home Treatment Team and the Early Psychosis (STEP) team, with their own dedicated psychiatrist. There are trust wide staffed ADHD and Perinatal services that patients can be referred to according to their referral criteria.
All the above teams are based at Magnolia House in Yeovil, where the post-holder will also be based. The post-holder will participate in reciprocal leave cover for other medical staff within South Somerset area that also includes Chard.
There are no inpatient responsibilities attached to this post. Inpatient beds for Yeovil are located on Rowan Ward, which is also based at Holly Court. This is an 18 bedded unit, providing assessment and treatment primarily for adults of working age experiencing an acute mental health problem.
