Are you a Specialty Doctor with a good grounding in Ophthalmology? Are you looking for the opportunity to develop a sub-specialty interest?
Here at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, we are excited to invite someone like you to join our Ophthalmology department as a full-time, permanent Specialty Doctor. You will have a good knowledge in Ophthalmology and will be provided with the opportunity to develop a sub-specialty interest, depending on your preference. You will be working within a supportive and friendly team which includes 12 Consultants, 3 Associate Specialists, and 7 Specialty Registrars.
Main duties of the job
Your new role will be based in various locations within Somerset. Outpatient clinics and all surgery will be undertaken at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and peripheral clinics will be held at Bridgwater, Minehead, Chard, and Burnham on Sea Community Hospitals. You will be expected and encouraged to actively participate in teaching sessions and research for professional development, as well as all audit projects within the department.

- Acute referral clinic 2 SPAs
- Laser 1SPA
- Study/Admin 1 SPA
- Teaching 1SPA (Fri PM)
This post comes with an on call commitment (1 in 7), which adds rest sessions to the above timetable.
Clinic templates include 8 patients per session.
Acute referral clinic (ARC): Provides primary care based on referrals from GPs, ACES (Somerset Acute Community Eye Scheme), Optometrists and the hospital A&E department.
Glaucoma: Provides specialised medical and surgical treatment, including laser, for patients with all forms of glaucoma. The role would also include a virtual notes review.
Retinal: Provides comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. The role would also include a virtual notes review.
