Are you a passionate and forward thinking Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist looking to work within one of the best performing CAMHS Services in the Country?

We are offering this role at 8 PAs, but would also welcome applications for 6 and 7 PAs part time working. We are also offering a relocation allowance with this post. This role will be bespoke for you, with further opportunities for your personal development, including roles in medical governance, appraisal, medical education, coaching and leadership alongside your clinical role. The role also attracts an additional, optional, 1.25PA and 3% supplement for out of hours all age on call rota, approximately 1 in 10

Main duties of the job

You will be joining a fully established team, with a low staff turnover, where you will receive a high level of support from the surrounding team, the senior leadership team and also the wider Trust. You will provide clinical leadership for a community-based Specialist (Tier 3) CAMHS Services in Somerset. You will cover the West of Somerset, which will see you working in scenic coastal areas. The majority of your caseload will be seeing young people from the Bridgwater and West Somerset area

The CAMHS West Community team includes 29 WTE clinicians. Somerset CAMHS is made up of a range of community and specialist teams including; Single Point of Access, Community Teams, Wessex House Inpatient, Enhanced Outreach/Home Treatment Team, CAMHS Liaison, Community Eating Disorder Service, National Deaf CAMHS, Forensic CAMHS and Tier 2.5 Service.

Within this role you will have the opportunity to further develop and shape the service as we continue to look at how we can improve the service further. We are looking for someone who can hold risk, formulate ideas, and enjoys creative thinking. If this is your first Consultant post that we can support you with a senior mentor at the start of your Consultant journey

We are expecting that you will be approved as a Responsible Clinician, or that you will be prepared and committed to undertake training to obtain Section 12(2) MHA/ Approved Clinician Status.

This role is an 8 Programmed Activity post. Applications for 6 and 7 PAs part-time working are also very welcome. The 8 PA post includes a split of 6 Direct Clinical Care Sessions and 2 Supporting Programmed Activities.

The role will be bespoke for the successful applicant, and may include mentoring, coaching and training as decided during the job application process and within the individuals job plan.

Job Summary

The post holder will provide clinical leadership for community-based Specialist (Tier 3) CAMH Services in Somerset. The post is based at Foundation House, Taunton, and the majority of the postholders caseload with be seeing young people from the Bridgwater and West Somerset area. The postholder will work alongside a CAMHS Consultant colleague (0.9 WTE) also based at Foundation House in Taunton seeing the Taunton catchment area, and an ST4 CAMHS Higher Trainee from the Health Education England South West Deanery scheme and a Speciality Doctor (0.6 WTE) who sees young people living in Taunton and some living in Bridgwater

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Consultant will provide Psychiatry input for children and young people who are experiencing a range of mental health problems. The CAMHS West Community Team includes 29 WTE clinicians, including a range of professionals including psychologists, nurses, social workers, family therapists, art psychotherapists, CBT therapists, mental health practitioners and support workers. The practitioners in each area are supported by an operational manager and team leader along with secretarial and administrative staff.

The current psychiatry medical caseload (September 2021) is 118, and the post-holders current case load is approximately 50, with the post holder care coordinating one third, the remaining two thirds most are care coordinated by other members of the multidisciplinary team. The majority of the cases that are care coordinated by the post holder are for medication review for neurodevelopmental conditions. Psychiatry input is not viewed as being the primary input for new referrals with other therapeutic interventions and MDT working promoted as the initial input for young person in Somerset CAMHS. The psychiatrist is in a consultative role in the team and providing senior clinical input into more complex cases and those requiring medication management.

The CAMHS West team provides a wide range of services, including:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of children with a range of mental health difficulties
  • Care planning
  • Therapeutic treatments and therapies
  • Medication: advice and prescribing
  • Advice, consultation and training to other agencies (Childrens Social Care, Education, Housing Providers, School Nurses and Health Visitors, GPs etc) to provide support for children and young people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties but not at the level of severity which would require Specialist CAMHS
