Job summary
Hereat Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the East Anglian Regional Radiation Protection Service (EARRPS), are currently looking for an apprentice healthcare science practitioner to join our team. This three-year apprenticeship will be delivered by the University of West England (UWE) leading to a BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science - Radiation Physics degree. Practical training to support this apprenticeship will be based in Cambridge.
We are looking for a person with a strong science background, and an interest in applying this in a healthcare environment, to assist in supporting the delivery of a wide range of radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics services toour diverse range of NHS and private clients in East Anglia.
EARRPS promote systems of work that ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff who come into contact with radiation generators (e.g. X-ray equipment), sealed or unsealed radioactive materials, and sources of non-ionising radiation (e.g. lasers, UV). Our clients include various acute and community NHS Trusts, dental practices, veterinary practices, schools and research laboratories. Our activities include radiology environmental and equipment checks; instrument calibration; radioactive waste management; advice on the application of relevant legislation or guidance and the development of processes and procedures to support this.
Main duties of the job
Alongside your studies you will assist in the provision of high quality radiation protection services to users of x-ray systems, sealed and unsealed radioactive sources, and non-ionising radiation. This includes the intercomparison and calibration of radiation detectors, performance ofquality assurance tests on x-ray imaging equipment, and advising customers on compliance with regulatory requirements in relation to radiation safety.
You should have excellent verbal and written communication skills to support work with clients from a wide range of backgrounds. You will be required to travel throughout the region and should have good organisational skills and a passion for service delivery.
To be eligible to apply for this apprenticeship you will need to satisfy the following requirements :
- Residency in the UK for at minimum 3 years
- Any non UK resident applicant must hold a right to work and remain to support a 3 year degree apprenticeship (which is not due to expire during this time)
- Not currently undertaking another apprenticeship, other funded adult learning (or be on the sandwich placement of a degree)
- Degree programme must be at least 60% new learning to the successful candidate
