Job description

Job responsibilities

Our caesarean section rate is 38% and we have an epidural rate of around 35%. We run 7 elective caesarean section lists per week. As a tertiary centre and Maternal Medicine Hub, we see a high proportion of high risk maternity cases and are seeing increasingly complex cases from across the region including women with medical comorbidities, including complex cardiac disease and obstetric complications including abnormally invasive placenta. We have a three bedded obstetric close observation unit, staffed by a dedicated high risk midwifery team, which admits over 60 women per month for Intensive Care Society Level 1 and 2 care. There are currently 6, soon to expand to 8, antenatal anaesthetic high risk clinics per month and a twice monthly multidisciplinary clinic for women with cardiac disease. We have recently started a monthly anaesthesia follow up clinic in line with the recommendations of the Ockenden report.

As part of the obstetric anaesthesia group the successful candidate will undertake one to two half day (1.25PA) obstetric sessions per week in the first instance on average, cover ad-hoc extra obstetric sessions as required and be part of the obstetric anaesthesia on-call team.

As a successful teaching hospital, there is unparalleled capacity for teaching, including involvement in the high fidelity simulation centre, monthly in-house PROMPT courses since 2019, and for participation in research within the department as well as the wider biomedical campus.

Please refer to the Job description and Person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
