We are delighted to offer an apprenticeship in the Radiotherapy department. The role is for an Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer.

Radiotherapy is a rewarding career which requires a highly developed knowledge and professional skill-set to enable you to treat a wide variety of patients most of whom have a cancer diagnosis. It combines high level technical knowledge and skill with patient care and oncology management. You will work as part of a team delivering Radiotherapy treatment and ensuring the holistic needs of the patients are met. Therapeutic Radiographers are the only staff group in the NHS whose training specialises in cancer care from the start of the course.

The Radiotherapy department at CUH has 8 treatment machines and 2 dedicated CT scanners. During your training and future career, you will work in all areas of the department.

You will have a positive work ethic, be keen to learn and be able to work in a Radiotherapy and wider multi-disciplinary team. You will receive support to gain a wide range of experience and skills, in addition to regular supervision and mentoring.

Main duties of the job

To work within the Radiotherapy department under the Radiotherapy Radiographer Apprenticeship programme.

Work under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner.

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will fulfil a key role in providing radiotherapy, care and support to individuals as specified in standard radiotherapy protocols. You will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient service in the Radiotherapy Department.

To perform a range of radiotherapy duties and procedures, as detailed within the apprenticeship programme, within the Radiotherapy department under the supervision of a qualified Therapy Radiographer at all times.

To ensure that the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, IRMER 2017 and associated codes of practice and guidance notes together with the Health and Safety at Work Act are understood and adhered to in respect of staff, patients and members of the public.

The Apprenticeship will comprise of:

  • On the job training and 6 hours minimum off the job training or new learning per week.
  • The academic component of the course will be delivered by Sheffield Hallam University, remotely / online, with a few days a year in person attendance on campus.
  • You will be provided with dedicated time for study to support your development in this role.
  • Apprentices will study key concepts and knowledge base relevant to Radiotherapy and Oncology.
  • On the job training will involve mentorship and structured progression for the Apprentice using an e-portfolio.
  • Days timetabled at the University are focused on building a community across the Apprentices and practical and simulated learning.
  • There will be a flexible learning approach - online lectures / seminars, self-directed learning and online learning resources to aid flexible learning.
  • Placements and professional practice experience are an integral part of the Apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices will be required to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Radiotherapy and Oncology approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the College of Radiographers (COR).

Applicants should normally have:

  • Three GCSE passes at grade C / grade 4 or above including Maths, English, and Science or equivalent ,e.g. Level 2 functional skills* plus one of the following: 112 UCAS points from 3 A levels (including at least 40 points from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics). Or equivalent from national BTEC qualifications, e.g. Extended Diploma in Applied Science, Health Science or Health Studies.
  • Access to HE Diploma in health studies, health science, nursing or another science-based course. Normally we require 15 of the level 3 credits to be graded at distinction level with 12 of these distinctions from Science Units.

Maths and English form a mandatory part of all apprenticeship standards, and the government requires that all higher and degree apprentices demonstrate evidence of English and maths qualifications at Level 2 or above (Nb. Grade 4 or higher for current GCSEs, previously Grade C or above), before an apprentice can pass through the Gateway and complete their apprenticeship.
