Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Duty Consultant for the Adult Critical Care Transfer Service.
The East of England Adult Critical Care Transfer Service is recruiting Consultants to work as Duty Consultants, partnering with a Transfer Practitioner (Critical Care Nurse / ODP) and a dedicated ambulance and driver to undertake duty shifts.
Main duties of the job
The main role is to undertake inter-facility transfers of adults in need, or of likely need, of critical care. Transfers will predominantly be within the East of England, but will include transfers out of region, as well as the provision of mutual aid to other regions and to other transfer services (including older children)
Duty Consultants will act as a point of advice and information to organisations and clinicians seeking to undertake an interfacility transfer
Duty Consultants will champion Transfer Training within local hospitals in support of intra- and inter-hospital transfers.
You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applicants will be expected to work an average of one duty shift per week. Applications are welcomed from those wishing to job-share.
Currently we are unable to appoint consultants who do not have CCT's in Anaesthesia or Intensive Care.
About us
The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.
Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
Job description
Job responsibilities
It is expected that most consultants would undertake shifts alongside an existing clinical role (eg Consultant Anaesthetist / Consultant Intensivist) as part of a job-planned activity. Duty shifts will need to align with other roles and must allow for adequate rest and avoidance of conflict between duties.
To maintain clinical expertise, Consultants will be expected to provide on average one duty period each week (42/year). Duty shifts are likely to be 12.5hrs in length. Initially shifts will consist of a day shift (08:00-20:30) and a twilight shift (11:00-23:30). It is expected that a third, overnight shift (20:00-08:30), will commence in 2022. Due to the nature of transfer work, overrunning shifts can be expected and will be paid.
The Transfer Service is seeking to attract clinicians from around the region. Travel expenses will be paid.
In addition to providing direct clinical care, Consultants will be expected to contribute to Clinical Governance and Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
Consultants wishing to take on a more substantive role within the service are encouraged to discuss this with the Clinical Directors.
The Transfer Service is hosted by an NHS Trust, currently Cambridge University Hospitals. Consultants will be expected to comply with the Services policies and procedures, and where applicable, those of the host NHS Trust.
Please refer to the Job description and Person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
