post of 8 PAs based at WestSuffolkHospital Bury
St. Edmunds
It is a new position,
comprising 6.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 PAs of Supporting
Professional Activity (SPA).
This post arises as a consequence of
increased workload within the department at West Suffolk Hospital, with the
need for more subspecialised skills in breast and HPB oncology, and the desire to develop and implement a
cancer frailty pathway
At the West Suffolk there is a major
oncology commitment to the management of urological, breast, colorectal, lung
and upper gastrointestinal cancers, and lymphoma. It is expected that the
appointee will jointly manage the breast cancer practice at West Suffolk with
Dr Moody and Dr Woodward and will take over the HPB practice. Other interests
may be accommodated by negotiation. The successful post holder would be
expected to see approximately 250 new patient referrals per annum.
The post holder will be expected to
cross cover his or her oncology colleagues at the West Suffolk and to provide
general oncology cover for that hospital including the management of patients
with cancer of unknown primary. There are established multidisciplinary teams
with weekly multidisciplinary meetings (MDTs) in all of the above
subspecialties.
The post has no regular out of hours
(evening or weekend) commitment, although the post holder will be required to
participate in any bank holiday cover rotas at West Suffolk Hospital.
A formal job plan will be agreed between
the appointee, the Lead Clinician and their Clinical Director (CD) and their
Associate Director of Operations (ADO), on behalf of the Executive Medical
Director, three months after commencement. This will be signed by the Clinical
Lead and the Associate Director of Operations and will be effective either from
the commencement date of the appointment or at an alternative agreed date.
The
appointee will work closely with the five Oncology Consultants already in post
at West Suffolk Hospital, and with our team of Oncology Clinical Nurse
Specialists (CNSs).
The
Oncology Department is based in the Macmillan Unit at the West Suffolk Hospital
(WSH), and clinics are held in the Macmillan outpatients area. Clinics comprise
new and follow-up patients, and are well supported by nursing and reception
staff. The CNSs are also available to support the Consultants during
out-patient clinics, and there are weekly nurse-led clinics running alongside
the Consultant clinics.
Ward
referrals are shared between the relevant site-specific Consultants.
MDT
meetings are held weekly at West Suffolk Hospital and the SMDT meetings are
teleconferenced with Addenbrookes and Papworth Hospitals.
The
post holder will also be working closely with the Frailty Project Manager and
the WSH Elderly Medicine team to develop and implement a cancer frailty
pathway. This will include setting up a Frailty MDT and working with the site-specific
MDT leads.
