West Suffolk Hospital Radiology department is looking to welcome a Consultant Radiologist who is independent and confident in ultrasound head and neck with proficiency in performing biopsy and FNAs. 2 PA Ultrasound commitment a week and 0.5 SPA. post holder will join the other 18 Consultant Radiologists in providing a
comprehensive radiology service to patients in West Suffolk and its environs. All
existing consultants undertake general radiology including CT, MR, ultrasound,
and plain film reporting. All existing radiologists have specialist interests
and support the relevant multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job
KEY TASKS:
To perform diagnostic, FNA and biopsy head and
neck ultrasound.
To accept responsibility for compliance with
Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations, along with the radiation
protection supervisor and the radiation protection advisor.
To accept personal responsibility for the
clinical care of patients referred.
To provide advice and information as required
to clinical colleagues and other staff.
To share responsibility for the supervision,
training, and professional development of radiographic staff and other staff as
necessary.
To participate in teaching sessions with other
clinical specialties.
To attend department meetings and participate
in department management and development of the service.
To participate fully in personal and
departmental audit and governance procedures.
Opportunity to attend relevant Trust
multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
To maintain CPD as per RCR guidelines.
To fully participate in Trust appraisal and
revalidation process.
The
post holder will also be expected to participate in departmental audit and
clinical governance processes, and will be expected to provide training and

post holder will also be expected to participate in departmental audit and
clinical governance processes, and will be expected to provide training and
education to medical and other departmental staff as required.
Clinicoradiological conferences and MDTs are recognised as an increasingly
important part of the department workload and participation in the sub
speciality meetings of interest is available to the postholder. The department
was one of the first in the country to achieve ISAS/QSI accreditation and
consultants are expected to embrace and participate in this process.
The successful candidate will be expected to hold
the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent, and to
satisfy the current regulations concerning accreditation prior to taking up
this appointment. Accreditation is not,
however, a statutory requirement. Since
1st January 1997 it has been a legal requirement for all doctors to
be on the Specialist Register before taking up a consultant appointment.
The
main x-ray department is located in the centre of the ground floor of the
hospital and is ideally placed to offer a diagnostic imaging service.
The
main department comprises six x-ray rooms; there are two fluoroscopy rooms
(Philips Xper Alluraand Siemens Axiom Sireskop.The Allura was
commissioned in February 2011)and general rooms. A purpose built x-ray
room opened in April 2005 in the A&E Department.
The
main departments PACS system is an Agfa Impax network. This was upgraded to
the latest AGFA system with the AGFA Enterprise Imaging System which has been
in place since January 2019. Soft copy
reporting is provided for all plain film examinations. All the images are
now available via the hospital intranet in all clinical areas. Images
from CT, MRI, ultrasound and fluoroscopy are available on the PACS system. This is integrated with a voice recognition
system and nearly all reporting is now undertaken with voice recognition.
There
are four satellite x-ray departments, one at Newmarket, one at Thetford, one at
Sudbury and one, managed by the practice, at Botesdale. Plain
radiographic images from these hospitals are reported at the West Suffolk
Hospital.
Ultrasound
Within
the main x-ray department are two ultrasound rooms, both equipped with Canon
i700 units purchased in 2020, together witha new Canon Xario 200Gto
assist with interventional procedures. There are plans for a third room to
address rising demand. A Canon i700 also provides DVT ultrasound and a Toshiba
APLIO_500 has been provided for ultrasound in Out Patients. Sonographers also undertake DVT scanning and
some inpatient work as well as obstetrics and gynaecology scanning and vascular
work. Ultrasound is also undertaken at Newmarket Community Hospital which is
shared by Radiologists and Sonographers performing OP and GP work.
CT
There
are three GE 64-slice CT scanners. There are teleradiology links to the
consultants homes for viewing all imaging modalities when on-call. Home
reporting is actively encouraged. Overnight CT's are reported by an offsite
reporting company from 8pm (4Ways).
MRI
This
department, near the rear entrance, is fitted with 2 Siemens 1.5T Magnets; Wide
Bore Siemens Aera and a Symphony TIM magnet. These two machines were installed
in 2014, one new and one upgraded. There are plans for a third scanner to
accommodate increasing demand.
Nuclear
Medicine Department
A new
nuclear medicine suite was opened in Summer 2005. A new Nuclear Medicine
machine has been installed recently since September 2019. This a GE 670
SPECT/CT 16 slice dual head Gamma Camera.
Breast
Screening Department
This
modern unit, completed in 2003, is separate from the main department, and
provides the NHS Breast Screening Programme to West Suffolk. It also provides
the symptomatic mammography service. There are Fast Track breast clinics
and assessment clinics. The radiologists share this work. This service has
recently been digitised and age extension introduced. The department has 2
Consultant Radiographers, 1 advanced practitioner and 2 assistant
practitioners.
Antenatal
and Gynaecology Ultrasound
This
unit is located adjacent to the antenatal clinic on the first floor. It has a
Canon a450 and Toshiba Aplio 500 and two Hitachi Arretta V70s , along with a GE
Voluson 510.
Information
technology
The
Hospital has an HSS CRIS Radiology Information System. Voice recognition
software has been introduced working directly off the AGFA workstation. ICE
Order Communications system is available for GP surgeries, and within the
hospital Cerner Millennium e-Care is used. The Hospital has gone paperless with
requests.
