Key tasks:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Plastic Surgery Consultant to work at the West Suffolk Hospital Foundation Trust. This is an exciting challenge for a Plastic Surgery specialist who is keen to get involved in delivering an excellent care and close connections with the Major Trauma Centre. There is also a fantastic opportunity to share and contribute your expertise into the future design and service of a new Plastic Surgery Department within the Newbuild West Suffolk Hospital.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Plastic Surgery

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of Plastic Surgery service.

Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, para-medical practitioners.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audits.

Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Duties of the post

The successful candidate will provide a general plastic surgery service with a special interest in skin cancer as directed by the Plastic Surgery department and pressure sore care.

The post holder will deliver 5 clinical sessions per week and will share their time between the Outpatients clinic, Theatres and the Day Surgery Unit.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

To provide appropriate plastic surgery services as directed.

To offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty

To contribute to meeting the Surgical Directorate objectives.

Organisational

To undertake appropriate projects and administration as required by the department.

Clinical Governance

To provide clinical services in line with the Trusts clinical governance arrangements, which are designed to ensure that, agreed quality standards are achieved.

Audit

To undertake audit of clinical practice within the department to ensure that current standards and evidence-based practice are applied.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

All career doctors are required to maintain and develop their clinical skills. Individual training and development needs will be identified through an appraisal process taking into account Royal College requirements. Full utilisation of study leave is encouraged.

RISK MANAGEMENT

To work within the Trusts clinical risk management policies and in particular to participate as appropriate in critical incident reporting

Proposed Timetable

This will comprise of 5 clinical programmed activities including:

2 Outpatient Clinic 2PA

1 MOPS/DSU 1.25PA

Theatre sessions 2.5PA

MDT 0.75PA

Ward Round - .25PA

SPA 1.5PA

Admin 2PA

Clinical Governance/Audit is undertaken on local and regional basis. It is expected that the appointee will be actively involved in this, and all routine clinical duties will be suspended during these sessions.

On-Call/Emergency Duties

The Plastics consultants receive a flexible PA which may include some on call or emergency activities.

Mentoring

The new appointee will be supported and mentored for the first six months of the post it will be provided by one of the consultants in the department, depending on the appointees choice.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PLASTIC SURGERY DEPARTMENT

The West Suffolk Hospital currently has 2 Plastic Surgery Consultants:

Arumugam Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Adeshola Adeniran Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Mr Ravi Ayyamuthu, ED Consultant Clinical Lead Plastic Surgery

At present the Plastic Surgery department provides management of all aspects of plastic surgery, mostly skin cancer surgery. Full time secretarial support and office space within the Plastics admin team is provided.

The Clinical Director for Surgery at West Suffolk is Mr Andrew Dunn, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

The Trust has strong links with Addenbrookes and it is envisaged that this will continue.

Relationships with other Departments:

The department works closely with other surgical specialities and there are also close links with dermatology, oncology, tissue viability and the department of radiology.

Teaching and Post-Graduate Medical Education

There is a well-equipped and active Post-Graduate Medical Centre which provides a varied programme of lectures and regular weekly meetings organised in a wide variety of specialities. There is an excellent multi-disciplinary library which is well-stocked with textbooks, standard journals, CD ROM journals, and there is a computer room with access to Mediline, the Internet and e-mail on a 24-hour basis.

Undergraduate Medical Education

The West Suffolk Hospital hosts undergraduate medical students from the University of Cambridge, specifically the Cambridge Graduate Course in Medicine (CGCM). The CGCM provides a fast track four-year course for students who hold an existing degree. The course started in 2001 with 21 students being admitted. In September 2018 the course increased to 41 students. The hosting of the CGCM has seen an investment in education on the hospital site, with the Education Centre being built to provide improved educational facilities for the hospital, and attached community services and general practices. The Education Centre includes the provision of library and lecture theatre facilities, the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Centre, and the Practical Clinical Skills Centre.Study and Training

The applicant is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education. Thirty study leave days over a three-year cycle are available, attending approved courses agreed with the clinical director.

Continuing Professional Development

There is strong support for CPD within the Trust, under the direction of the Medical Director, Clinical Tutor and Specialty Tutors. All consultants are encouraged to undertake CPD in accordance with their Royal College guidelines.

The post-holder will be expected to participate in the annual appraisal system, be cognisant of the General Medical Council's "Good Medical Practice" and be responsible for his/her own revalidation with the General Medical Council.

Clinical Quality

There is a wide-ranging Clinical Governance programme across the Trust, supported by specialist staff. Clinical involvement in Clinical Audit and collaborative care planning is of paramount importance. Clinicians are generally expected to use proven and agreed clinical guidelines, especially those published by NICE.

Experience

Essential

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT.
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable

• Six years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
• Fellowship level experience in reconstruction and/or sub specialty training
• Special interest in pressure sore care and skin cancer as directed by the Plastics Surgery department

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GMC registration and hold a license to practice.
• Success in Intercollegiate Specialty
• Examination or overseas equivalent
• FRCS

Desirable

• Postgraduate thesis
• Entry on GMC Specialist Register and hold a licence to practise or be eligible for entry on the Register (within six months of completion of Certificate of Completion of Training) at time of interview

Knowledge

Essential

• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following:-
• -that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or
• -Have the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)-Overall 7.5 Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, and Writing 7.

Teaching Education & Research

Essential

• Experience of supervising junior doctors (FY1, FY2, ST1/2 and SpRs).
• Ability to teach clinical skills
• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable

• Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Management Ability

Essential

• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
• Ability to organise and manage out patient priorities, waiting lists and operating lists
• Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

Desirable

• Experience of audit management
• Ability to manage and lead specialist unit, surgical directorate and working parties as appropriate
