Job summary
We are looking for a committed
and enthusiastic clinician to join the team of 6 consultants providing Specialist
diabetes and endocrinology care across West Suffolk. The post-holder will be
based at the West Suffolk Foundation Trust site.
Inpatient care will be
delivered on the 39 bed Diabetes and Endocrinology ward G3, along with
Outpatient clinics based on site, and at integrated care hub locations.
The job role requirements
include;
Depth and breadth of experience in acute
ward based and out-patient medicine and Diabetes and Endocrinology
Clinical training and experience
equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Diabetes/Endocrinology
Clinical
training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in
General Medicine
Experience of supervising FY1s, FY2s
StRs and SpRs (or equivalent)
To have a thorough knowledge and
demonstrable understanding of Good Medical Practice from the GMC
Main duties of the job
Provide advice and day to day management of medical inpatients with
diabetes or endocrine disease.
Provision of outpatient services in diabetic medicine including
contribution to the insulin pump clinic and the diabetes foot clinic.
Provision of outpatient services in endocrinology.
To take part in the medical on call rota and to manage medical
inpatients.
Teaching and training of intermediate, junior staff, nursing staff and
medical students.
To actively participate in clinical governance and audit.
To maintain and develop continuing professional development (CPD).

This is a
new 6 months post (indicative 10 PAs) based at West Suffolk Hospital.
Duties & responsibilities of the post
The
appointee will be expected to help provide a clinical service in Diabetes,
Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine and will be required to undertake
emergency on-call work in accordance with the existing on-call rota.
Acute Medicine
The
appointee will be on-call 1:10 on weekdays and at weekends (On-call rota
currently under review). The in-patient
beds will be shared with Dr Joohi Majeed, Dr Nishan Wijenaike, and Dr Jayaweera,
Consultants in Diabetes & Endocrine and General Medicine.
All
medical staff are now ward based and the appointee will conduct three ward
rounds weekly on ward G3. There are five doctors in training based on that ward
including one FY2, one CMT, one STGP trainee and two FY1s. They are supported by two SpRs specialising
in Endocrinology with General Medicine.
The
appointee will be responsible for emergency care ward rounds when on call. The division of medicine operate a physician
of the day service, with the on call physician starting the ward round on the
following morning. The on call physicians
clinics are cancelled on the following morning.
Diabetes/Endocrinology
The appointee
will join the department to bring the team up to 6 consultants, based in the
Diabetes Centre at West Suffolk Hospital.
All consultants run general diabetes clinics, as well as specialty
clinics.
It is
envisaged that the appointee would provide a weekly general diabetes clinic but
would also have responsibility for the diabetes foot service and the pump
service.
We have
excellent links with our paediatric, ophthalmic and vascular consultant
colleagues. The diabetes team also
includes two specialist registrars.
The
inpatient diabetes service includes seven diabetes specialist nurses based on
medical wards and one based on surgical wards, who run a 7 day service. We have recently expanded our community
diabetes service to seven nurses. The
community diabetes service provides mentored clinics with practice nurses in
our local GP surgeries, as well as supporting hospital out-patient
clinics. We have recently had an
additional diabetes dietician appointed, as well as an additional podiatrist
and a psychologist dedicated to diabetes.
The community diabetes service is ranked as outstanding in national
audits.
All six
consultants provide a comprehensive service for endocrinology. All members of the team have an interest in
pituitary disease and regularly contribute to the Regional Pituitary MDT.
Patients requiring pituitary surgery have this carried out at Addenbrookes
Hospital. We have close liaison with our
endocrine surgeons and radiological colleagues and participate in a fortnightly
thyroid MDT.
The team
meet fortnightly for case review and discussion.
On Call & Emergency Duties
The
on-call rota will be on a 1:10 basis with the appointment to this post (On-call
rota currently under review). If the
candidate is unexpectedly asked to cover weekends or bank holidays they would
be given time off in lieu.
Job Plan
A job plan
will be agreed by the Clinical Director in the first instance and approved by
the Medical Director on behalf of the Chief Executive. This plan will be reviewed annually and will
provide an opportunity for discussion of the individuals personal development
plan and for appraisal. The annual
review will be used to check that the record of fixed and flexible sessions is
accurate and compliant with the EWTD, covers on-call commitments and is
compatible with the agreed template for the speciality and that any problems
arising can be resolved. This also
provides an opportunity for constructive debate about the individuals personal
development plan including CPD and any evolving special interests, which the
appointee may wish to pursue. Further SPA
time will be available if the post holder wishes to take on other additional
responsibilities such as clinical governance lead or educational supervision of
trainees.

II work may be undertaken within the Terms and Conditions of Service and may be
discussed and revised at this review.
Clinical
Governance/Audit is undertaken as an ongoing programme within the Region. It is expected that the appointee will be
actively involved in this and all routine clinical duties should be suspended
during these sessions.
The new appointee will have the opportunity to be mentored by a senior
