Job summary

The Medical Division seeks an outstanding Nephrologist to join our team.

The post holder will be responsible for in-patient care of a 33-bed acute medical/renal ward (shared with other consultant colleagues from the Department of Nephrology). The post holder’s duties will also include general nephrology out-patient clinics.

Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues to develop a new multidisciplinary vasculitis service at the West Suffolk Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To join 3 existing consultants in managing Renal Services at West Suffolk Hospital.
  • Provide advice and day to day management of medical inpatients with renal disease
  • Provision of outpatient services in renal medicine at West Suffolk Hospital.
  • Develop and lead a new multi-professional vasculitis service at West Suffolk Hospital
  • To take part in the physicians on call rota at West Suffolk Hospital and to manage medical inpatients on F8/associated outlying wards with Dr Petchey and Dr Yiu.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all in-patients and out-patient under the care of your team.
  • Teaching and training of intermediate, junior staff, nursing staff and medical students.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

  • To fulfil obligations relating to continuing medical education and professional development, appraisal and revalidation

Consultant in Nephrology and General (Internal) Medicine

This is a full-time post based at West Suffolk Hospital but with clinical links to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The post is funded for 10 PAs. The post-holder will join 3 consultant colleagues (Dr Chong, Dr Petchey and Dr Yiu) in the Nephrology Department. Dialysis PAs will be from Addenbrookes Hospital – 1PA for two dialysis shifts (total of 26 patients)

Duties & responsibilities of the post

At West Suffolk Hospital the appointee will be expected to provide a clinical and administrative service in Nephrology and General (Internal) Medicine and will be required to undertake emergency on-call work in accordance with the existing on-call rota.

General Medicine

The appointee may be on-call 1:10 (subject to change) on weekdays and at weekends. The in-patient beds will be shared with, Dr W Petchey, Consultant Physician and Dr Yiu, Consultant Physician, on ward F8 and associated outlying medical wards (wards F5/6). The idea would be for rotation of the consultants on and off the ward.

The weekday working pattern starts at 08:30hrs until 17.00hrs Monday to Fridays. There are protected shifts for administration and SPA time (1.5PAs). All medical staff are now ward based and the appointee will conduct regular ward rounds including board rounds as agreed on the Job Plan. There are seven doctors in training based on the ward, including one SpR in General Medicine & Rheumatology, two IMT3, 1 CMT one FY2, one STGP trainee and two FY1s.

The appointee will be responsible for emergency care ward rounds when on call. The division of medicine operate a physician of the day service, with the on-call physician starting the ward round on the following morning. The on call physician’s clinics are reduced /cancelled on the following morning.

The Trust delivers services to patients seven days a week and aims to provide equality of treatment and outcome regardless of the day of the week. To meet these aims and changing service requirements, the Trust may need you either to work temporarily outside of your core hours or to permanently change your core working days and hours. The Trust will give you reasonable notice, where possible, of temporary changes to your days or hours of work and will consult with you and/or your staff representatives about substantial permanent changes, but ultimately, these are changes which may be required of you.

Nephrology

The appointee will continue current nephrology services including weekly general nephrology clinics. The appointee is expected provide a high standard of care to renal patients and a consultant opinion on any patient referred to nephrology services.

In addition, the appointee is expected to develop and manage a new vasculitis service for the West Suffolk Hospital. This will include inpatient reviews and the development of a new outpatient clinic in conjunction with colleagues from the Department of Rheumatology and ENT. The appointee will be expected to work closely with colleagues from Addenbrookes Hospital (tertiary vasculitis and renal service) to ensure the smooth transfer of patients requiring biopsies, as well as repatriation of patients to the new WSH clinic. The appointee will have strong links with the Renal Team at the Addenbrooke’s site with honorary contracts from Cambridge University Hospital

In addition, the candidate will be expected to share supervision and support of the renal nurse specialist with the existing nephrologists.

Administrative

To produce, maintain and update departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence based best practice on a continuing basis.

The appointee will be encouraged to take an active role in any relevant Trust committees or sub-committees and any local or regional Nephrology meetings.
