At the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Porters are essential members of staff.
Moving patients and equipment is just part of our job.
We liaise with other teams, helping with whatever way possible with the aim to provide the best possible service to the patient.
The satisfaction of supporting someone visiting the hospital and the friendly working environment makes this an appealing opportunity.
We currently have 3 positions available:
1 x 37.5 hours per week
1 x 22.5 hours per week
1 x 15 hours per week
Main duties of the job
General Porters are required to assist with day-to-day duties that are necessary for the smooth running of the Department. These duties include but are not limited to:
- Transportation of patients to and from wards and departments.
- Delivery and collection of essential items within the hospital grounds, which will require interpersonal skills and the ability to carry out manual handling tasks.
- Working with a variety of people including staff at all levels, patients and visitors.
Applicants must have good customer service and communication skills coupled with a professional appearance which is appropriate to a front of house role.
Full training is provided and a health assessment will be required before becoming a team member.
STAFF CAR PARKING
Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 - 18:30. This role is eligible to park on site.
For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital.
This parking restriction does not apply if an individual is required to work on a weekend or if they are required to complete "on call" duties within their role.

Duties include:
- Assisting in the general collection and delivering of service.
- The collection of food trolleys to and from the main kitchens and delivery to wards and or departments
- The collection and transportation of domestic waste (non- clinical) from wards and departments to the waste holding area and then compacting the waste.
- The collection of dirty laundry from wards and or departments to the dirty linen bay and delivery of clean laundry back to wards.
- To assist with the collection of equipment from the Stores area and delivery to the appropriate ward or department.
- The collection and delivery of any other equipment, including medical gas cylinders,
- The preparations of medical gas cylinders for use i.e., transferring gauges/flow meters
- The collection and replacement of Sharp Smart containers to wards and or departments and maintaining the Sharps Smart area in a neat and tidy fashion.
- The collection of clinical waste from wards and or departments to the waste station and disposal and recording of clinical waste within the Waste Station area.
- Assisting in the removal of deceased patients to the Mortuary.
- The transportation of patients to and from wards and or departments.
- Assisting with the control of traffic and car parking within the Hospital grounds when required, i.e. Major incidents, Missing Patients and other emergency situations.
- Assisting with on-the-job training to new members of staff.
