The ideal candidate should have a good grounding in general ophthalmology and cataract surgery.
The ideal candidate should have a good grounding in general ophthalmology and cataract surgery. The post will provide an opportunity to develop a sub-specialty interest in medical retina, but candidates with training in other complimentary sub-specialties will be considered.
The post holder will be part of the senior clinical team with a priority on the delivery of the service. Whilst you will take responsibility for your own training and development, the Trust will offer you opportunities to further your knowledge and skills and you will be assigned an Educational Supervisor.
You will work in accordance with the GMC Good Medical Practice and Trust policies and engage in revalidation and appraisal.
Applicants should have completed their specialty training in Ophthalmology and fulfil all the competencies of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Specialty Training Curriculum in this respect.
Main duties of the job
Specialty Doctors must have a minimum of 4 years' experience since qualification, 2 of which must be in the relevant specialty.
To provide outstanding care to patients.
To participate in the teaching of Foundation and Junior Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students.
Maintain our 18 week performance.
To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital.
To attend other hospitals within the Trust if so requested by the supervising Consultant.
The post holder will undertake additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Deliver services within tariff without jeopardizing service quality.Increase and maintain market share within the local community.
The post holder's professional progress will be reviewed annually by the supervisory Consultant.
Post holders are encouraged to attend courses and conferences and departmental meetings to meet CME requirements.

This position is aimed at candidates who have completed their initial training in ophthalmology. It is desirable for applicants to have achieved MRCOphth or an equivalent qualification. The role will be adapted based on the successful candidate's experience, with an emphasis on providing opportunities for ongoing training and personal development wherever possible. Applicants should already have the skills necessary to manage both general and urgent direct referral ophthalmic patients effectively.
The Ophthalmology Department caters to a population of about 280,000 across 600 square miles, centred around Bury St Edmunds and extending to Thetford in the north, Newmarket in the west, Sudbury in the south, and Stowmarket in the east. The department also operates peripheral clinics in Newmarket and Sudbury.
Following the challenges posed by COVID-19, the department is on a path of significant recovery, presenting new avenues for development, innovation, and quality enhancement.
