Job summary
We are looking for a committed clinician to join the team of 6 consultants providing Specialist Diabetes and Endocrinology care across West Suffolk. The post-holder will be based at the West Suffolk Foundation Trust site.
Interviews will be held on Friday the 31st May 2024.
Inpatient care will be delivered on the 33 bed Diabetes/Endocrinology and General Medicine ward G3 and Diabetes outliers, along with Outpatient clinics based on site, and at integrated care hub locations.
The appointee will be expected to help provide a clinical service in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine and will be required to undertake emergency on-call work in accordance with the existing on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
- Depth and breadth of experience in acute ward based and out-patient medicine and Diabetes/Endocrinology
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Diabetes/Endocrinology
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Medicine
- Experience of supervising FY1s, FY2s StRs and SpRs (or equivalent)
- To have a thorough knowledge and demonstrable understanding of "Good Medical Practice" from the GMC

The appointee will join the department to bring the team up to 6 consultants, based in the Diabetes Centre at West Suffolk Hospital. All consultants run general diabetes clinics, as well as specialty clinics
It is envisaged that the appointee would provide a weekly general diabetes and endocrine clinics but would also have responsibility for the diabetes foot service and the pump service.
We have excellent links with our paediatric, ophthalmic and vascular consultant colleagues. The diabetes team also includes two specialist registrars.
The inpatient diabetes service includes four diabetes specialist nurses based on medical wards and one based on surgical wards, who run a 7 day service. The community diabetes service has four nurses. The community diabetes service provides clinics in our local GP surgeries, as well as supporting hospital out-patient clinics. We two diabetes dieticians, two outpatient nurses, a pump clinic nurse, and a medical obstetrics nurse, as well as three podiatrists
All six consultants provide a comprehensive service for endocrinology. All members of the team have an interest in pituitary disease and regularly contribute to the Regional Pituitary MDT. Patients requiring pituitary surgery have this carried out at Addenbrookes Hospital. We have close liaison with our endocrine surgeons and radiological colleagues and participate in a fortnightly thyroid MDT.
The team meet fortnightly for case review and discussion.
The appointee will undertake bi-weekly Acute Assessment Unit twilight (5-9pm) shifts. The in-patient beds will be shared with Dr Nishan Wijenaike, Dr Jayaweera, and Dr Soong, Consultants in Diabetes & Endocrine and General Medicine.
All medical staff are now ward based and the appointee will conduct three ward rounds weekly on ward G3. There are five doctors in training based on that ward including one FY2, one CMT, one STGP trainee and two FY1s. They are supported by three SpRs specialising in Endocrinology with General Medicine.
The appointee will be responsible for bi-weekly Acute Assessment Unit twilight (5-9pm) shifts.
