Job summary

The Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) works across NHS Trusts in England and Walesto improve emergency health care systems, collating and analysing trauma patient care data within each Trust. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN) Administrator within the Emergency Department at West Suffolk Hospital.

The registry of more than 250,000 injured patients provides a statistical base to support clinical audit and a rich source of information to support trauma service improvement. TARN produces quarterly comparative reports for participating hospitals.

You will provide timely, accurate and reliable data to TARN, of patients admitted to the trust and transferred to other trusts with major trauma and subsequent completion of data submissions via the electronic data collection and reporting system.

You will also participate in clinical audit projects within the Emergency Department. You will have an excellent attention to detail and be able to record accurately on a variety of IT systems, demonstrating a target driven ethos within our trust values.

Knowledge of ED/ trauma units would be advantageous but not essential.

The TARN database is to be replaced by the National Major Trauma Registry in April 2024

Main duties of the job

As part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be required to engage with and work alongside health care professionals and administration staff working across the trust and occasionally with other organisations.

The successful candidate will provide administrative support for the submission of data to national clinical audit projects i.e. Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN).

To provide administrative and technical support for clinicians pursuing approved other clinical audit projects and their clinical audit meetings.

To maintain and contribute to Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN) databases at the West Suffolk Hospital.

Collate clinical data, as requested by the Emergency Medicine Department, to assist the department with clinical governance programme.

To provide audit data as requested by Emergency Medicine Department and assist in the compilation of reports as required.

Specific TARN Duties

  1. To co-ordinate the provision of accurate, reliable and timely data to TARN by completion of data submissions via the web-based system, according to the TARN inclusion criteria.

  1. Regular liaison with Hospital IT/information personnel who can provide lists of patients admitted to the Trust with traumatic incidents (based on ICD10 hospital coding).

  1. The use of eCare Electronic Patient Records (EPR) system, PAC system, Evolve, Community view, SIREN, East of England Trauma network, Power Bi TARN, TARN analytics, Orion dashboard access, Theatre and Emergency Department information.

  1. The retrieval and tracking of case-notes/Trauma booklets for patients included in TARN.

  1. To support and promote trauma audit liaising with both clinical and audit/information staff to ensure the availability of good quality data.

  1. Liaison with other relevant NHS Trusts and TARN data Co-ordinators to identify inter- hospital transfers and improve service.

  1. To assist clinical and other staff in the interpretation of data reports received from TARN and to identify areas for future audit and review.

  1. Dealing with requests for TARN data from clinicians and other hospital staff.

  1. To make TARN Analytics presentations to appropriate meetings when required.

  1. Attendance at TARN training events including Foundation Course and Reporting & Refresher Course training session and an annual conference.

  1. Any other duties relating to the TARN requirements.
