Job summary
Lead
the radiology nursing and imaging assistant team to deliver best practice
services to patients from the fundamental aspects to advanced care
interventions. Link with other service
areas to ensure standards of care are in line with specialist services and
promote the clinical area as a positive area for staff experience. Deliver direct patient care, acting as an
expert practitioner and a role model to the whole radiology team. Liaise with all health professionals,
especially radiographers, radiologists and support staff to ensure patients
receive the best services and experience possible.
Job responsibilities
KEY TASKS:
Clinical/Professional
1.
Exercise professional accountability
and uphold the NMC Code of professional conduct.
2.
Maintain clinical skills by
regularly working as part of the department team.
3.
Encourage and promote continual
quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based practice, where
necessary facilitating and managing change.
4.
Facilitate optimum standards of
care, initiating, implementing, and evaluating programmes of ongoing
improvements. To have responsibility for continuing patient audits, and the
clinical correlation of data. Specifically, to have responsibility for hand
hygiene audits within radiology, mammography and gynaecology ultrasound and
attend hand hygiene and infection control meetings at Trust level.
5.
Act as a role model, providing
clinical leadership to all staff, maintaining morale and promoting effective
team work. Provide specialist radiology nursing advice as appropriate.
6.
Network with professional colleagues
within the directorate and throughout the Trust to ensure best practice is
shared and improvements to patient care are made.
7.
In conjunction with the Senior
Operations Manager for Imaging (SOM) and Head of Radiography, monitor
patient/user satisfaction and investigate complaints and incidents in a
proactive manner ensuring appropriate action is taken to address issues raised
through a positive learning culture.
8.
Supervise/monitor and advise on
programmes of care.
9.
Facilitate effective communication
and liaison with the inter-disciplinary team and ensure a unified approach to
service development.
10.
Communicate with patients, relatives
and staff using a high level of skills in response to a diverse range of
complex situations.
11.
To effectively communicate with all
disciplines, including patients, carers, and relatives, in the preparation of
patients for interventional procedures. This may take place in an emotive
atmosphere. To ensure that all patients are prepared correctly in accordance
with department policy.
12.
To be responsible for ensuring that
the correct clinical examinations, e.g. blood tests, are undertaken prior to
radiological examinations.
13.
To ensure that intermediate life
support techniques and equipment in the radiology department are monitored and
up to date.
14.
To prioritise and facilitate the
arrangement of interventional appointments.
15.
Work in line with the IR(ME)R
regulations at all times and advocate appropriate use of radiation PPE within
the Radiology department
Leadership & Management
1.
Create
a team culture that values and supports staff to reach their full potential and
possess a high degree of personal, professional and job satisfaction.
2.
Support
the SOM in promoting and sustaining a culture within the radiology service
where patients feel safe, feel cared for, and have confidence in the staff
treating them.
3.
Identify
and co-ordinate individual education and development needs and facilitate all
staff to meet their development potential using the full range of learning
resources available.
4.
Ensure
ongoing performance review as a means of promoting good staff morale, building
skills and competence. Ensure all staff have on-going development plans in line
with Directorate and Trust objectives.
5.
Facilitate
the development of management and leadership skills of the radiology nursing
staff, especially the qualified staff.
6.
Lead
in the recruitment, selection and induction process to facilitate acquisition
and retention of competent, skilled and knowledgeable department staff who will
meet the clinical and service needs of the patient.
7.
Continuing
responsibility for the provision of service by ensuring an optimum level of safe
and effective care within budgetary resources.
8.
Take
responsibility for implementation of infection control best practice within the
departments, undertaking Hand Hygiene and similar Audits and attending relevant
Trust level meetings.
9.
To
lead, and be a role model, in making the radiology service a flagship service
for the treatment of all our patients with compassion and consideration. To
ensure that patients are treated with privacy and dignity, and to advise
Radiology Management Team on any developing requirements of single sex
accommodation.
10.
Take
overall responsibility for duty rotas which provide optimum skill/grade mix
whilst utilizing resources to their maximum potential.
11.
Contribute to the identification of resource implications of Service Developments
and assist in the preparation of business cases as necessary.
12.
Support
the development of evidence-based clinical care pathways in conjunction with
the multidisciplinary team.
13.
Identify
performance issues, including attendance, professional conduct, capability
etc., with support from the SOM and Head of Radiography.
14.
Assist
in the investigation of clinical incidents and errors and to identify and
support any required change to nursing practice.
15.
Maintain
stock levels, evaluate new equipment and contrast media by means of trials and
research. To be responsible, alongside the supplies department, for meeting and
negotiating with company representatives.
Teaching
and Training
1.
Create
a proactive teaching and learning culture by ensuring the development and
maintenance of education programmes for students and members of staff within
your area of responsibility. Support NVQ training and Anatomy & Physiology
lectures for NVQ students.
2.
Take
an active role in facilitating the training of staff both on the ward and
throughout the Directorate by planning/participating in appropriate
orientation/educational programmes and initiate training programmes for new
service developments. Assisting with training medical staff in practical
skills, such as those involved in angiography.
3.
Ensure
there is a framework of mentorship and preceptorship throughout the team, audit
and monitor effectiveness of learning for staff and students.
4.
Provide
practical support by working alongside nurses as a clinical and educational
advisor. Also provide clinical nursing support during interventional
procedures.
5.
Implementation
of, and continued development of services, including angiography
pre-assessment, and supporting change elsewhere in radiology services.
6.
Represent
the Department in nursing issues at Trust-wide forums and contribute to
Trust-wide managerial nursing educational initiatives.
7.
Maintain
knowledge of current trends of health care and development within the
profession, disseminating this information to all nursing staff.
8.
Use
reflection to formulate and prioritise areas for self-development.
9. Develop and maintain own
professional knowledge and skills through life-long lea
