Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Moving and Handling Team and its ever-growing service.

As the Moving and Handling Trainer you will be supporting both acute and community staff with training as well as delivering best clinical practise across wards, departments, and other trust locations.

There are opportunities to develop knowledge in standard and specialised practise and be a role model for our acute, community and non-patient handling teams.

A thorough induction will be provided as well as designated time with the Head of Moving and Handling and Display Equipment to enhance musculoskeletal and display screen equipment knowledge.

There will also be time spent with both Moving and Handling Advisors to learn different techniques and problem solve.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be delivering both theory and practical Moving and Handling Training across the acute and community sector.

They will also be expected to support wards, departments and our many community settings.

A passion for teaching and excellent interpersonal skills are a must in creating a safe and comfortable teaching environment as well as assisting with management of complex patients in the acute and community.

The purpose of this role is to support acute and community staff in the delivery of best practice techniques related to moving and handling, in order to promote a safety culture that enhances staff health and patient safety and maintains compliance with current legislation.

The post holder will deliver high quality moving and handling training as well as deliver clinical practice in wards, departments and across our community locations, contributing to the reduction of work-related musculoskeletal injury and moving and handling incidents across all staff groups.

The post holder will be expected to develop their knowledge and practise in standard and specialised areas, be visible and accessible providing clinical knowledge and expertise in best practice when training and supporting acute and community staff.

The post holder will act as an expert and role model throughout the organisation developing the workforce with the ability to provide a high standard of moving and handling across the organisation.

  • Demonstrate excellent inter-personal communication skills whilst sharing knowledge and expertise in moving and handling with a range of staff and patients in differing contexts and locations.
  • Take a supportive and coaching based approach when working with newly qualified/qualifying staff.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with all colleagues, managers, and staff at levels at all times.
  • Adopt a professional communication style verbally and in writing, including in emails, reports and day-to-day interactions with colleagues.

  1. Planning and organising
  • Take ownership for the co-ordination of own diary on a day-to-day basis, in consultation with the Moving and Handling team.
  • Assist in meeting mandatory training targets set by the Trust.
  • Monitor, document, and report appropriately incidents related to moving and handling.
  • Be able to plan and work independently in the office, training room and in acute and community settings.
  • Organise information and evidence, presenting these in a report format where required.

  1. Managing equipment and resources
  • Audit, maintain, monitor and keep accurate records of the whereabouts of moving and handling equipment across clinical, non-clinical and community areas, including safety checks and replacement schedules.
  • Audit and monitor the condition of equipment in the training room, ensuring it is up to date and functional.
  • Assist in the installation of display screen equipment for staff across the Trust as directed.

  1. Training and staff support
  • Deliver generic and bespoke programmes of moving and handling training which can be flexible and responsive to Trust needs.
  • Contribute to the review, development and continual development of moving and handling training to ensure content remains up-to-date and relevant.
  • Incorporate new technologies and learning techniques to enable engagement with, and accessibility of, learning.
  • Working with colleagues, ensure training schedules are planned and managed in a timely fashion, including all travel arrangements, training venues and equipment are booked in sufficient time prior to training session.
  • As part of training sessions, influence and encourage staff to change practices which have been identified as possible contributory factors in poor moving and handling practice.
  • Adhere to delivering training in line with current best practice, meeting legal requirements.
  • Provide instruction and supervision to staff in the workplace including wards, clinical support departments and community locations/settings.
  • Evaluate training and staff support activities and act on outcomes accordingly, including documenting and escalating any concerns raised in training sessions.
