Job summary

We are one of 40 Trusts across the country to receive funding for a new hospital from the Government's Health Infrastructure Plan.

An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated individual to join our Financial Management team, reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance.

The postholder will lead a team of six Finance Managers, supported by Deputy Finance Managers and Management Accountants who concentrate on working strategically with senior managers and clinicians, to drive and support the business decisions of the Clinical Directorates.

The ideal applicant will have a background in operational or business finance, with excellent communication skills. Whilst an NHS background would be ideal, we are also open to recruit from the private sector. The successful applicant will be CCAB qualified (or CIMA) and be able to demonstrate continued personal development.

Relationships with Senior Operational Colleagues and finance team members is critical to success in this role and therefore an on-site presence is required for at least three days per week - the team are currently working in a hybrid manner with approximately 50% at home.

Main duties of the job

The broad purpose of the post is to support the Trust to meet both its financial and performance targets by:

  • Leading the Finance Managers and Operational Budgets holders through the annual budget setting process
  • Ensuring the Financial Management team report accurate and timely management accounts and performance against Cost Improvement Programmes
  • Working alongside other senior finance colleagues to develop and implement the Finance Departments annual Business Plan
  • Working with a number of stakeholders to analyse and interpret financial and non-financial data, using benchmarking and other resources to make recommendations for improvement and support the change process.
  • Line management and development responsibility for all Finance Managers, undertaking appraisals and framing personal development plans.
  • Ensure the Finance function is accredited to HFMA and professional accounting bodies

The Head of Financial Management will ensure that Business Cases presented to the Trust Investment Panel are robust and that all resource implications are considered.

The Head of Financial Management will ensure that the Finance Managers share good practice and work as a team when appropriate. In particular they will work closely with the PMO office in order to advise and guide the delivery of Trust wide CIPS. The postholder will ensure areas of both opportunity and concern are investigated and, where appropriate, action is taken to ensure income is maximised and services are provided efficiently. The prime source of financial information will be the Trusts Patient Level Costing and Information System (PLICS) and Service Line Reporting (SLR) as well as the Finance Dashboard and appropriate benchmarking.
