Job summary

The West Suffolk NHS Trust is delighted to offer exciting opportunities for two individuals to become student Anaesthesia Associates (AAs). Training will commence in early 2023 for 24 months to achieve an MSc in Anaesthesia and Perioperative science course through UCL within the Department of Anaesthesia at the West Suffolk Hospital (WSH). The West Suffolk Hospital has an excellent reputation for training and an established AA programme.

AAs are highly trained, skilled practitioners that work within the anaesthetic team under the direction and supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist to provide perioperative patient care. The course, supported by supervised clinical practice within the Anaesthetic Department at the WSH, will enable you to develop the necessary academic and professional qualities to undertake the role of Anaesthesia Associate (AA). Once the course has been successfully completed, candidates will be invited to apply for a permanent role at the WSH.

Main duties of the job

As a Student AA, you will complete competency modules and two national exams. The training will be provided in partnership with UCL. The majority will be delivered by e-learning and clinical placements with one-to-one tuition in the hospital setting to acquire the skills, knowledge and experience for delivery of anaesthetic services. Student AAs will assume increasing responsibility during the course of their training as their competency and skill base increases, with consultant supervision. Each student will be assigned an educational supervisor and mentor to guide them in their journey through this programme.

Upon qualification there are opportunities to extend the scope of practice by undertaking additional training.

The successful candidate must meet essential academic requirements, be ambitious, motivated and keen to learn, as well as understand the challenges of working in an advanced and developing role in the NHS. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
