Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative individual to work with our professional chaplaincy team, and our chaplaincy volunteers, to act as an advocate for pastoral and spiritual care within the Trust. They will need to be self-motivated, self-aware and able to provide spiritual sensitivity and compassion for patients, families, visitors, staff and students within the hospital community.

Main duties of the job

To be a chaplain within James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundations trust you will need to be prepared to work with a wide variety of people which will include; patients, their relatives and friends; staff and students; and visitors to the hospital.

Chaplains are expected to offer pastoral care regardless of cultural or faith tradition. They also offer spiritual care where appropriate and seek specialist spiritual care where it is not available within the chaplaincy team. Person centred care with integrity is an essential concept through which we can offer high quality spiritual care to everyone under the James Paget family.

Key links in the Paget pastoral chain will be working with, ward staff, the palliative care team, maternity bereavement support, bereavement services, the mortuary team, and the wellbeing team.

The successful candidate will have experience of working alongside a range of faith and belief organisations (religious and non-religious), excellent interpersonal skills, ability to encourage others and the spiritual and emotional stamina required to carry out this demanding service.

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Healthcare Chaplaincy in Healthcare chaplaincy (or equivalent relevant qualification/equivalent relevant experience in healthcare chaplaincy)
  • Evidence of accreditation from own faith authority, belief community or ordination
  • Evidence of completion of further studies relating to pastoral care
  • Evidence of knowledge of a range of religions and faith. Specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures underpinned by theoretical knowledge.
  • Eligibility to enable registration with the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplains (UKBHC)

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Significant and recent pastoral / church-based ministry
  • Experience of working with a range of staff at all levels
  • Proven record of ecumenical co-operation plus ability to work in multi-faith situations
  • Experience as a hospital chaplain within an acute healthcare setting is essential for this leadership role

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Evidence of effective communication skills both written and oral
  • Evidence of ability to prioritise working demands working with the boundaries of supervised practice
  • Evidence of the ability to make decisions within defined boundaries
  • Evidence of the ability to differentiate personal beliefs, morals and values from healthcare ethics
  • Evidence of counselling ability

  • Ability to plan or facilitate Chaplaincy services throughout the Trust
