Band 5 Staff Nurse - Neonatal Unit

Job summary

The Neonatal Unit at the James Paget Hospital is a Special Care Unit (SCU). We have 9 cots and provide short term Intensive Care, on-going High Dependency and Special Care for babies from 30 weeks. We have the facilities to stabilise babies prior to transfer for further Intensive Care. We also provide Transitional Care for 6 babies on the Postnatal Ward. We are part of the East of England Neonatal Network and work closely with the other hospitals within our cluster.

The post holder will provide family centred, evidence based care for babies and their families on the Neonatal Unit and Transitional Care.

The post holder will be a Registered Children's Nurse, Registered Adult Nurse or Registered Midwife and will provide family centred care for our patients and their families, following competency based learning. If not already completed, you will be expected to complete the Neonatal Qualified in Speciality course. The post holder will need to be flexible to the needs of the Neonatal and Paediatric service.

The role will give the post holder experience of working in a small but busy Neonatal Unit and there will be further opportunities to develop the role further depending on experience and interests.

The post holder will be expected to attend all mandatory training and all relevant training for neonatal care including: Baby Friendly Breastfeeding course, Newborn Life Support course and Assessor/Supervisor for students training.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to deliver a high standard of Family Centred Care.
  • Provide family centred, evidence-based care for babies requiring Intensive Care (short term), High Dependency and Special Care.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary team across Neonatal, Paediatric and Maternity departments.
  • To create a culture of continuous quality improvement through audit, learning from complaints and patient/family feedback.
  • To promote a friendly and supportive environment for parents and relatives in which they can learn to care for their babies in preparation for discharge.
  • To be an advocate for the babies and to promote effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team including parents.
