Job summary

The new role of Vascular Access Assistant was created aiming to develop the Vascular Access Practitioner in the insertion of Vascular Access devices.

The successful candidate will assist with the Vascular Access Practitioner in the insertion of Vascular Access Devices (Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters and Midlines) , support and observe patients during device insertion, opening packs using aseptic non-touch technique, assisting with sterile procedure, reposition the patient to facilitate the procedure, connect the patient to the appropriate monitor / device under the supervision of the vascular access practititioner. The candidate will support the Vascular Access Practitioner with auditing, capture and maintain patient data/documentation accurate pre, during and post procedures.

Initial hours will be 2 days a week, no unsocial hours included, with the potential for more hours as the service develops.

Main duties of the job

  • Assisting in the care of the patient undergoing insertion of a vascular access device
  • Supporting and observing the patient during the line insertion - identifying any concerns to the nursing team
  • Maintaining a high standard of patient care within agreed occupational standards
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team for the benefit of the patient, appreciating each member of the team's needs and role.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and dignity at all times
  • Establishing effective communications between departments and all speciality disciplines within the department organisational structures
  • Capture and maintain patient data/documentation using the various media
  • Assisting in positioning the patient for vascular access insertions
  • Preparing tables/ bed space as appropriate
  • To be professional in manner and appearance
  • Ensuring familiarity with emergency procedures, i.e. fire and arrest and attending annual updates
  • Maintaining a commitment to personal development
  • To recognise own legal accountability for standards of care by ensuring adherence to local policy document(s)
  • Support to maintain administrative tasks required for patient care
  • To escalate issues or concerns in a timely manner along the appropriate management channel.
  • Complete a set of competencies related to vascular access devices dressing change, and complete the tasks autonomously when required

The main objectives of this post are:

Assisting in the care of patients undergoing insertion of an indwelling vascular device by the Vascular Access Team. Portering and transferring patients between wards and the departments if necessary to help with flow of the list. Supporting the Vascular Access Practitioner in providing a safe, high quality environment for the carrying out of procedures by the patients bedside by: Assisting in the preparation of the unit /work area Assisting in the preparation of the scrub and circulating team. Assisting the Practitioner during a line insertion Assisting in the general upkeep and maintenance of stock levels. Assisting the practitioner in the preparation of the bed area, moving furniture to make space, cleaning the table, and replacing it all following the line insertion. Providing a safe departmental environment which minimizes the risk of infection. Support of administrative tasks. Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual Assist patients with personal hygiene, toileting and use of continence aids Be aware of the patients needs emotional, social, physical, and cultural. Respect privacy, dignity and beliefs. Acts in a way that supports equality and diversity values. Work as part of the team in a co-operative, professional and constructive manner. Maintain confidentiality at all times Report any information regarding the wellbeing of the patients to the Registered Health Care Professional in a timely manner. Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals To undertake a range of clinical competencies, for example vascular access dressing changes as requested by the Registered Health Care Professional and have competencies checked annually by a Registered Healthcare Professional. At the request of the Registered Health Care Professional, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the SHCA role and report accurately to the Registered Health Care Professional, the assessment undertaken, on patients To assist in blood collection. Assist the Registered Health Care Professional in maintaining a clean environment Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patients medical condition Act in accordance with all organisational policies and procedures and within expected values and behaviours Demonstrate good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures Demonstrate good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the registered healthcare professional as required Promote health and safety maintaining best practice in health, safety and security Share ideas with colleagues to improve care and suggest areas for innovation Participate in audit activities being undertaken in area of practice Contribute to the improvement of service by reflecting on own practice and supporting that of others Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines both local and national Regularly attend workplace and staff engagement meetings and contribute positively to discussions about the improvement of care
