Job summary
The new role of Vascular Access Assistant was created aiming to develop the Vascular Access Practitioner in the insertion of Vascular Access devices.
The successful candidate will assist with the Vascular Access Practitioner in the insertion of Vascular Access Devices (Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters and Midlines) , support and observe patients during device insertion, opening packs using aseptic non-touch technique, assisting with sterile procedure, reposition the patient to facilitate the procedure, connect the patient to the appropriate monitor / device under the supervision of the vascular access practititioner. The candidate will support the Vascular Access Practitioner with auditing, capture and maintain patient data/documentation accurate pre, during and post procedures.
Initial hours will be 2 days a week, no unsocial hours included, with the potential for more hours as the service develops.
Main duties of the job
- Assisting in the care of the patient undergoing insertion of a vascular access device
- Supporting and observing the patient during the line insertion - identifying any concerns to the nursing team
- Maintaining a high standard of patient care within agreed occupational standards
- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team for the benefit of the patient, appreciating each member of the team's needs and role.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality and dignity at all times
- Establishing effective communications between departments and all speciality disciplines within the department organisational structures
- Capture and maintain patient data/documentation using the various media
- Assisting in positioning the patient for vascular access insertions
- Preparing tables/ bed space as appropriate
- To be professional in manner and appearance
- Ensuring familiarity with emergency procedures, i.e. fire and arrest and attending annual updates
- Maintaining a commitment to personal development
- To recognise own legal accountability for standards of care by ensuring adherence to local policy document(s)
- Support to maintain administrative tasks required for patient care
- To escalate issues or concerns in a timely manner along the appropriate management channel.
- Complete a set of competencies related to vascular access devices dressing change, and complete the tasks autonomously when required
