Job summary

Applications are invited to for the post of Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an interest in Gynaecological Oncology to join our friendly and supportive team at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months. Services included in the department at the present time are, obstetrics - general and specialist clinics, (level 1 neonatal services), general gynaecology, urogynaecology, cancer services, colposcopy services, fertility clinics, termination of pregnancy services, paediatric gynaecology service. Our main tertiary centre is at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital 26 miles from the James Paget University Hospital. The University of East Anglia is our medical school. Medical students come in years 1 and 4 to our department.

There are around 1,800 births each year at James Paget.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will share the Obstetric and Gynaecology workload with Consultant colleagues, including out-of-hours responsibilities with a Consultant on-call rota.

The weekday on call commitments are currently 1:12, with 1:10 cover at weekends. The frequency of on call will be reviewed by the team once we have recruited into the additional posts and potentially plan to move to 1:14 weekdays and 1:12 weekends. O&G advice will be given to our colleagues in other specialities as required. Governance, CPD and teaching will also be significant parts of the post holders duties.

The historic city of Norwich is only 20 miles with excellent schools, rail links to London and an international airport, for easy access to the Continent and beyond.

Job responsibilities

The multidisciplinary team comprises colleagues based at James Paget University Hospital, and our tertiary hospital, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich. The Gynae-oncology Network MDT team comprises of 3 consultants (including this post and a weekly visiting gynaecology oncologist from NNUH) backed by a comprehensive team: Histopathologist, Cytopathologist, Radiologists, Gynaecology Cancer Nurse Specialists, Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, and the Macmillan Palliative Care Team.

The successful applicant will work alongside our team who run the triage service, rapid access clinics, MDT outcome and Oncology follow up clinics to facilitate prompt diagnosis in addition to providing a link between this service and the oncology team.

They will also work to enhance Cancer pathways and performance, lead on the development of new pathways with the MDT and support the senior management team in shaping the future strategy of the gynaecology oncology service within the department.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Obstetric and Gynaecology on-call rota, which is currently a non-resident on call component, is 1 in 10 weekends. There is 1 in 12 weekdays non-resident after hours on call commitment.

Applicants will be required to undertake a full Obstetric and Gynaecology commitment to so we are looking for an applicant with a special interest in Gynaecological Oncology who also has good Obstetric skills who can commit to the provision of high quality Obstetric care. We would welcome an individual with the drive and ambition who will continue to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to support the further development of the service, particularly applicants who would be willing to undertake a leadership role.

The Consultant team has recently been expanded and we are recruiting into the 3rd of 3 additional posts to support the development of the Obstetric and Gynaecology service providing care to women in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area, with this role specifically focussing on Gynaecological Oncology. This and the other 2 posts will increase the Obstetric and Gynaecology Consultant team from 11 to 14.

The post is an attractive opportunity for a consultant to work as part of the multidisciplinary team providing care to women and includes early-stage low grade endometrial cancer patients, intermediate risk ovarian masses in addition to diagnostic services and some general gynaecological workload.

  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Hold a certificate or being within 6 months of completion of training or being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
