Job summary
The point of care (POC) coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day running of the POCT service, supported by a POCT support worker.
They are responsible for supporting POCT implementation (based on clinical need) and ensuring a fit-for-purpose clinical governance framework through staff training, quality control/assurance, audit, and attainment of relevant accreditation.
The POCT Coordinator will provide a visible presence for the department throughout the hospital and is responsible for liaising between various staff groups and departments to deliver a safe, effective, responsive, and expanding service.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for the management of the Point of Care Testing activities within the Trust and other organisations for whom Pathology provides POCT services.
Supervise staff undertaking or supporting POCT activities including direct supervision, training and ongoing performance assessment.
Liaise and communicate with managers and users of POCT equipment in the Trust and other departments who have responsibilities for POCT equipment to ensure best practice and good governance mechanisms are in place.
Provide advice to Trust managers and staff regarding the suitability and application of POCT devices within the Trust and other healthcare organisations; identifying potential areas of expansion and supporting implementation where appropriate.
To scrutinise POCT developments and make recommendations where appropriate particularly in terms of governance and quality.
Supervise the use of specific POCT devices in the Trust including calibration, control and routine maintenance. Resolve immediate analytical problems and perform repairs to instrumentation where appropriate, and liaise with manufacturers where repairs cannot be completed in house.
To be a key member of the POCT Trust Committee, providing oversight and assurance relating to the POCT service.
