Clinical Engineering Technician Apprentice - Huntingdon

Job summary

The Clinical Engineering Technician (Apprentice) will support the delivery of safe, effective, and compliant medical device management services across the Trust. Working under the supervision of senior Clinical Engineering staff, the post holder will assist with and progressively undertake planned preventative maintenance, functional and electrical safety testing, fault-finding, and repair of a broad range of medical equipment in accordance with departmental procedures, manufacturer guidance, and relevant standards (e.g., HTM, ISO, MHRA).

During the apprenticeship period, the post holder will initially carry out tasks aligned with Band 4 competency expectations, developing the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours required for progression to full Band 5 responsibilities upon successful completion of training and competence sign-off.

The role involves regular interaction with clinical and non-clinical staff, requiring clear communication, sound judgement, and a methodical approach to problem-solving. The post holder will contribute to ensuring that medical devices used in patient care are safe, reliable, appropriately maintained, and compliant with statutory, regulatory, and Trust governance requirements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • T Level (e.g., Engineering & Manufacturing), BTEC Level 3, or equivalent Level 3 qualification in an engineering/technical subject

Desirable

  • Eligibility for enrolment onto a Level 6 Electro Mechanical Engineer Degree Apprenticeship
  • Further technical or vocational training (e.g., manufacturer or medical device servicing courses)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with electronic, electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical systems (practical or academic)

Desirable

  • Experience in a technical, engineering, workshop, or laboratory environment
  • Previous experience in NHS, healthcare engineering, or medical devices

Knowledge

Essential

  • Basic understanding of electrical/electronic engineering principles
  • Basic understanding of medical equipment safety and function

Desirable

  • Awareness of standards and regulations (e.g., IEC 62353, UK MDR, HTM guidance)
