Job summary

This full-time position is for a Specialty Doctor with substantial experience in General and Upper GI Surgery. It offers a unique and exciting opportunity for motivated and ambitious individuals to join and contribute to the surgical team. The successful candidate will primarily work within the Upper GI subspecialty team, supporting a busy department that handles both emergency and general surgical cases.

The post will offer valuable experience in managing both acute and elective general surgical patients. During the Consultants' on-call week, daily Post-Take Ward Rounds will be conducted, with no routine clinical activities scheduled. Given that nearly half of the hospital's surgical admissions are emergencies, this role provides extensive exposure to managing acute abdominal conditions, head injuries, and common general surgical emergencies. Strong support is available from consultant anaesthetists and intensivists for the management of critically ill patients, including resuscitation and patient transfers to neurosurgical units.

The role also requires gaining familiarity with the pre-, peri-, and post-operative care of general surgery patients, as well as acquiring practical skills relevant to the post holder's level of training to effectively support the general surgery department.

Main duties of the job

This role involves supporting both outpatient and inpatient care for patients with general surgical issues referred by GPs and hospital colleagues. A key responsibility is assisting the consultant surgeon in delivering specialised Upper GI Surgery care and managing emergency admissions while on-call, including supporting FY1 doctors and consulting with the on-call consultant as necessary.

Additionally, the role includes supervising and teaching junior doctors, medical students, and non-medical staff in accordance with the guidance from the Postgraduate Dean and relevant program directors. You will also be expected to adhere to patient management guidelines set by the surgical consultants and Trust, participate in audits, contribute to national audits, and engage in continuing professional development, including annual appraisals and the Trust's Clinical Governance activities.

About us

We are dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity within our workforce and warmly welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on encouraging those from disabled, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, as well as candidates from our local area.

As part of our commitment to supporting our employees we offer a range of benefits including:

  • Membership of the NHS Pension Scheme:
  • Flexible working opportunities;
  • Enhanced hourly rates for unsociable hours e.g. night shifts, weekends, bank holidays;
  • Opportunities for career development and training to help you progress in your role;
  • Wellbeing support and activities to promote a healthy work environment;
  • Access to our in-house physiotherapy service;
  • On-site canteens offering subsidised meals;
  • Subsidised staff parking (currently free);
  • Free Stagecoach Bus Travel to and from work within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
