Our Pathology Team is happy to welcome applications for a Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join the Mortuary and Bereavement Services team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. You will be based at Peterborough City Hospital, however, travel to Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon will be required.

Whilst working towards achieving the RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science, you will be undertaking a variety of activities associated with the post-mortem care of patients. Your duties will include reception, transfers, identifications and viewings of the deceased, ensuring that deceased and their relatives are treated at all times with respect and dignity.

As our new Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist, you will be assisting with post-mortem examinations as directed by the pathologists and senior mortuary staff. Participation in the provision of a 24 hour out-of-hours service will also be required, once an appropriate level of competency has been achieved. This will require working alone without immediate supervision.

You will demonstrate excellent communication skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and backgrounds, as well as tact and sensitivity when attending to the deceased and their bereaved relatives. You will be well organised and able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, sometimes with little supervision.

If you like to join our team and pursue the career opportunities we provide, we would love to hear from you!

Main duties of the job

You will gain all the skills and knowledge required to participate in routine and specialist work of the department, including receiving, recording, weighing and measuring the deceased into the mortuary as per agreed protocols, preparing the postmortem room and equipment, and assisting with standard postmortem examinations.

You will learn how to assist in the collection, preservation and despatch of autopsy samples to other departments or establishments.

You will learn the skills and techniques needed for the reconstruction of the deceased to the standards required by the department following autopsy, as per agreed protocols.

You will learn how to prepare patients for suitable viewing by their relatives.

You will release the deceased to funeral directors as per agreed protocols.

As part of your administrative duties, you will ensure that documentation and electronic records are created accurately and maintained appropriately, and the resources are used optimally.

You will be in charge of the documentation and safe keeping of deceased's personal effects and valuables, and you will assist with identification procedures for police or HM Coroner.

You will comply with the HTA Codes of Practice and adhere to UKAS accreditation standards.

You will maintain personal, professional and technical competence and awareness by voluntary CPD, as well as personal and professional standards required by the Trust and by the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technicians (AAPT).
