Job summary

  • To promote and ensure the delivery of high quality, evidence based care/best practice
  • To provide support for the senior cardiac physiologists/service leads
  • To provide a quality service for patients requiring invasive and non-invasive cardiology investigation procedures
  • Responsible for assessing patients' needs whilst undergoing investigative procedures and providing appropriate level of care required

Main duties of the job

  • To perform a range of the following procedures in accordance with established policies and professional codes of practice ensuring high standards and optimal results:
    • 12 lead ECG performance and interpretation
    • Exercise tolerance testing
    • Responsible for leading the test ensuring test appropriateness and safety.
    • Ambulatory ECG monitoring
    • Ambulatory BP monitoring
    • Ambulatory ECG analysis
    • 24 hour and cardiac event recorders

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Under supervision, until proficient, provide technical cover in the cardiac catheter laboratories (during RHC and LHC) and during pacemaker insertion
  • Under supervision, until proficient, perform Tilt Tests within the Cardiac Investigations Departmen
  • Under supervision, perform pacemaker and ICD checks for both inpatient and outpatients. With guidance write reports for the Cardiologists and in cases where a serious condition is diagnosed, seek urgent verification from a chief technician(s) and/or inform a cardiologist on dut
  • To hold a current ILS certificate, leading/participating in arrests where required. Provide support for all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including debriefing, with subsequent preparation of the patient for a safe transfer to an appropriate recovery environment if required
  • To be responsible for the management of your caseload. This will involve the assessment, prioritisation and planning of appropriate examinations, ensuring the provision of effective and sensitive evidence-based care to the highest standards
  • Allocates tasks to student/trainees when appropriat
  • Using in-depth, detailed analysis and interpretation of a range of clinical and technical data, the post holder will provide a factual report for specialised studies performed personally (and where necessary by others within the Trust and in the PCT setting) which will be monitored by senior staff
  • Maintain clear, concise and contemporaneous records
  • Attend study days and courses as required, to maintain, improve and develop specialist skills
  • Comply with the relevant Codes of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice
  • Employ the safe and appropriate use of sensitive, specialist medical equipment
  • To be involved in writing, evaluating and auditing of guidelines, protocols and local policie
  • To ensure all equipment is stored, cleaned and operated safely according to Trust and Local policies and to train junior staff to do the sam

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology or equivalent (e.g. HNC in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement)
  • Registered or working towards registration with RCCP/HCPC

Experience

Essential

  • Working towards becoming proficient in solely performing echocardiograms and reporting on the scan findings
  • Proficient in specialist non-invasive clinical technical cardiac investigations
  • Working towards becoming proficient in invasive cardiology including cardiac catheterisation and pacing
  • Basic IT skills

Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to work competently and perform, report and supervise Physiologist led Exercise ECG treadmill tests, Ambulatory and resting ECG's
