Job summary
This is a full-time Consultant Colorectal Surgeon post working within the North West Anglia Foundation Trust. The General Surgical Department provides a comprehensive General Surgical service covering all the main sub-specialities, including Laparoscopic Surgery, with specialist nurse support in some areas.
Additional interests would be welcomed particularly Pelvic Floor, Advanced Endoscopy especially EMR skills and Laparoscopic Colorectal surgery. Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for Trainees if in a Training Programme within the UK.
In addition to Laparoscopic Surgery, for colorectal cancers we perform both supine and prone APERs, ELAPE and reconstruction along with plastic surgeons. Benign colorectal work includes IBD, pelvic floor, THD, endometriosis and complicated diverticular disease. TAMIS is provided for, TATME has been recently started and we are recognised by the cancer network for management of Early Rectal Cancer.
Main duties of the job
The General Surgical Department provides a comprehensive General Surgical service covering all the main sub specialities including Laparoscopic Surgery with specialist nurse support in some areas.
There are 50 beds based on 2 dedicated surgical wards at Hinchingbrooke Hospital where both emergency and elective work is undertaken. Designated general surgical in-patient and day surgery theatres are located within a large theatre suite. There is also a separate endoscopy suite.
The General Surgical Department has an active audit programme as part of the Trust's rolling half-day programme. Topics are allocated to junior medical staff 6 months in advance.
The department has an emerging research profile and is actively participating in several national NIHR portfolio studies.
Several regional/national level courses are run by the department e.g. Laparoscopic Hernia course, Anastomotic course.

There is a strong commitment to education from a departmental and organisational level, and the appointee will be expected to undertake teaching.
There is an active Medical Education Centre with seminar rooms and a lecture theatre, and an on-going programme for senior and junior medical staff organised by the Clinical Tutor and the Medical Education Department.Continuing Professional Development (CPD):-
There is strong support for CPD within the Trust, under the direction of the Medical Director, Clinical Tutor and Specialty Tutors.
Senior medical staff have an entitlement to study leave of 30 days in a three-year period and the current study leave budget allowance is £700 per annum per person.Clinical Library:-
