Clinical Engineering (CE) provides services to ensure that the Trusts medical devices are operating effectively and safely with the minimum of downtime. Medical devices include all electrical, electronic, mechanical, and medical gas systems used to diagnose and treat patients.

The role is site based (at RPH), covering core service hours on a rota system and is responsible to the Head of Clinical Engineering.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties Summary

Preventative maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration and acceptance testing on a wide range of equipment within the electrical / electronic sphereWritten/verbal communication for both simple and complex medical device related information in such a way as to ensure the stakeholders full understanding and comprehension, and to minimise any barrier(s) in understandingSupport other team members when required with work that falls outside of own expertise and seek support and advice if neededAccurate data input into the CE department equipment management systemWork to and maintain a good knowledge of appropriate legislation(s), policies and procedures and quality standardsAdhere to health and safety regulationsParticipation in a Clinical Engineering On-Call rota may be a future requirement if deemed necessary as a business need; be contactable out of hours for advice on medical equipment matters by the Senior Engineer on-call.

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent professional membership of relevant professional body
  • Registration as clinical technologist

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive practical experience in Clinical Engineering workshop practices and techniques with clearly demonstrate able experience of medical equipment support in either the NHS, UK private sector or overseas medical equipment support sector
  • Understanding of medical device operation and management
  • Experience in applying workshop technology to patient critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
  • Excellent verbal, communication and negotiation skills with the ability to articulate information accurately
  • Demonstrate ability to organise, prioritise, communicate and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of health & safety and risk management
  • Ability to concentrate even when interrupted or when subject to changing working patterns
  • Able to deal with sensitive situations due to working in clinical areas

Desirable

  • Specialised knowledge of Defibrillation and Multi-Parameter Monitoring products
  • Knowledge of quality systems
  • Understanding of audit purposes
  • Able to use MS 365, ECRI AIMS medical equipment database
