Job summary

We are looking to appoint an experienced Deputy Head of Clinical Engineering who is, enthusiastic, motivated, has a proactive approach and who will enjoy the challenges of delivering a high-quality service.

The Clinical Engineering Department maintains over 55,000 medical devices.

The Deputy Head of Clinical Engineering an integral role within the team ensuring that medical devices are regularly maintained, serviced, and repaired if required ensuring availability and patient safety.

The role is based at Royal Papworth Hospital on Cambridge Biomedical Campus and is a full time 37.5hrs per week, worked over 4 days covering 07:00 to 17:00. A 5-week rota is used which ensures a day off rolls throughout the weeks as the cycle progresses.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialised clinical technological services for the preventative maintenance, servicing and repair to a wide range of complex and patient critical medical devices.

Ensure the safety, efficiency and reliability of medical device equipment by undertaking regular checks, servicing and repairs.

Communicate with clinical users to understand the nature of problems with medical devices and assess the urgency of the request.

Carry out calibration, safety and acceptance testing of medical equipment and safely de-commissioning devices at the end of life.

Maintain and monitor stocks of appropriate components and spares for the repair and maintenance of medical devices.

Keep relevant technical records of equipment performance, malfunction and work performed.

Proficiency with the use of IT systems is required to provide technical expertise, assistance and training

Liaise with medical device manufacturers to obtain information and provide feedback on equipment performance.

May be required to be contactable for advice by the Engineer on-call if a medical device issue arises out of hours and partake in an on-call rota.

Report to the Head of Clinical Engineering the Status of medical devices in service within Trust. Ensure delegated instructions are cascaded to and executed by Clinical Engineering team members.

  • Degree plus specialist knowledge acquired through courses and experience to masters level or equivalent

Desirable

  • Registration as clinical technologist
  • Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent professional membership of relevant professional body.

Experience

  • Extensive practical experience in medical engineering workshop practices and techniques experience of medical equipment support in either the NHS, UK private sector or overseas medical equipment support sector
  • Specialised knowledge of mechanically related devices
  • Broad knowledge of medical device operation and management
  • Experience in applying workshop technology to patient critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft products.
