Clinical Fellow post available from April 2025 This post will be for a period of 12 months with the potential for further extension subject to satisfactory performance, achievement of competencies and mutual agreement.
Papworth Hospital is one of six designated centers in the UK that provides heart and lung transplantation, and one of 5 centers that provides ventricular assist devices (VAD) for heart failure. It has a world leading retrieval/transplant program regarding novel technologies, including DCD heart transplantation. The Surgical Department provides cardiac surgical service for a population of 3.4 million. This post will offer applicants the opportunity to obtain excellent clinical experience in heart and lung transplantation, donor care and specialist therapies for advanced heart and lung failure. There will be opportunity for research too.
Applicants should hold a GMC registration and have a minimum of 3 years' experience in cardiothoracic surgery and ideally 6 months in cardiothoracic transplantation.
The salary range for this post will be between 70,320 to 97,800 per annum on a local pay scale which is inclusive of the on-call supplement. Increment based on competency achieved.

Main duties of the job
On call transplant and retrieval rota
Theatre experience with up to one list per week, to maintain general cardiac surgical skills.
Attend daily ward rounds on transplant patients with transplant physicians for valuable surgical inputs.
Managing end stage heart failure and lung failure patients
Research opportunities -- both clinical and experimental research opportunities are available. Adequate support will be provided to write abstracts, manuscripts for publishing in peer reviewed journals.
Attendance at national and international meetings and courses related to heart lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support will be encouraged.
Junior doctor/students teaching- We have dedicated time for curricular teaching for the trainees on general cardiothoracic surgery side and a separate programme for teaching in thoracic transplantation.
