Job summary

Royal Papworth Hospital was first established as a tuberculosis settlement in 1918. In the 100+ years since, it has grown to become a world-leading heart and lung hospital, with a strong history of innovation and pioneering medical advances.

As Heritage Officer you will manage the hospital's archive collections to ensure its long-term preservation for the benefit of hospital staff, patients and the wider community.

You will use the collection to understand and share the history of Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and celebrate its achievements.

This will include conducting research, maintaining heritage displays, providing talks to local groups in Cambridgeshire and working on projects to mark anniversaries and special occasions.

You will also be the key link in stakeholder relationships with museums and archivists.

This is a Royal Papworth Charity-funded post, working within the communications team at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

* Manage the hospital's archive collections to ensure its long-term preservation, with key responsibilities including acquisitions, temporary loans, disposals, object cataloguing and research, auditing, as well as monitoring of environmental conditions for display and storage.

* Undertake research on the history of the hospital to provide information for both internal and external audiences.

* Respond appropriately to public enquiries and acquisition offers.

* Deliver public engagement activities to share the history of Royal Papworth for staff, patients and the wider community, such as interpretation and object displays, digital content, public talks, and contribute to hospital events and anniversaries.

* Contribute to the wider work of the communications team, such as helping to deliver events.

* Collaborate with the Royal Papworth Charity team and identify potential funding opportunities for future projects.

  • Educated to degree level

Desirable

  • Expected to possess or be working towards a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject, such as Museum Studies, Archives & Records or similar

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in an archive, museum or heritage environment in either a paid or voluntary capacity
  • Experience of collections and archives, and working with a Collections Management System (CMS)
  • Knowledge of conservation issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to produce clear and concise written material
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team and communicate with colleagues throughout the organisation
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise own workload and deliver projects
  • Good general IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

Desirable

  • Interest in and knowledge of medical history and collections
  • Creative flair and interpretation skills for displays, exhibitions and presentations
