Job summary

We are looking to appoint an experienced Specialist Mechanical Engineering Technician who is, enthusiastic, motivated, has a proactive approach and who will enjoy the challenges of delivering a high-quality service.

The Clinical Engineering Department maintains over 54,000 medical devices.

The Specialist Medical Engineering Technician undertakes an integral role within the team by ensuring that mechanical medical equipment is regularly maintained, serviced, and is repaired if required.

The role is based at Royal Papworth Hospital on Cambridge Biomedical Campus and is a full time 37.5hrs per week, worked over 4 days covering 07:00 to 17:00. A 5-week rota is used which ensures a day off rolls throughout the weeks as the cycle progresses.

Main duties of the job

This role is to provide specialist mechanical skills and knowledge to support the trusts mechanical clinical assets.

This would including planned servicing, repairing, calibration and general maintenance of a wide range of medical equipment in line with manufacturers guidelines and legal guidelines. Equipment maintained would include but not be limited to ECMO consoles, heart and lung bypass units and patient weighing and height measuring equipment.

Good organisational and administration skills are required with the ability to use and be confident and competent with the Microsoft Office range of software. Along with accurate data entry to the trust medical equipment management database (ECRI AIMS)

This role is a senior role within the team so the ability to self-manage one's time and workload is essential as is providing support and guidance and line management to team members.

Essential

  • BEng degree or equivalent appropriate subject or relevant experience to an equivalent level.

Desirable

  • Registration as clinical technologist
  • Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent professional membership of relevant professional body

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive practical experience in Medical engineering workshop practices and techniques with a substantial experience of medical equipment support in either the NHS, UK private sector or Overseas medical equipment support sector
  • Specialised knowledge of Mechanically related devices
  • Broad knowledge of medical device operation and management
  • Experience in applying workshop technology to patient critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
