Job summary

This exciting new post will form part of our pharmacy senior leadership team, leading on the governance and safe use of medicines throughout the Trust and the pharmacy department. As medication safety officer the post holder will have close links with the wider governance team as well as being an active member of medicines safety regional and national networks.

We are looking for a motivated individual with strong leadership and communication skills and an extensive background in medicines and patient safety.

Main duties of the job

To manage, deliver and co-ordinate medicines governance and safety across the Trust, in partnership with senior pharmacy leadership and the wider governance team.

To be an active member of the senior pharmacy leadership team. Proactively identifying issues and making operational decisions when required to maintain the smooth running of the service.

As Medication Safety Officer, to be the named individual within the organisation responsible for encouraging medication incident reporting, systems focused learning and sharing of good practice.

To contribute to improving health outcomes for patients by ensuring safe and effective use of medicines within pharmacy and the wider Trust, supported by robust policies and procedures.

To lead on the Trust's medicines formulary, collaborating with the ICS and wider Health and Care System to facilitate medicines optimisation across the system.

To line manage the medicines optimisation pharmacist and other pharmacists and pharmacy technicians as part of the senior pharmacy leadership team. To lead on pharmacy departmental risk and governance matters including managing safety alerts, medicine recalls and medicines shortages.

To lead and deliver education and training in medicines governance and safety for pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Master's degree in pharmacy (MPharm or BPharm or equivalent)
  • Registration as a pharmacist with GPhC
  • MSc in Clinical Pharmacy practice
  • (post graduate)(or equivalent)
  • Qualification as independent prescriber
  • Level 5 of Patient Safety Training Syllabus programme

Desirable

  • Member of relevant professional groups e.g. UKCPA, RPS

Experience

Essential

  • Training in leadership and experience of managing a team/service.
  • Recent experience and knowledge within medicines safety and governance.
  • Experience of leading multi professional project and audit work with demonstrable experience of change management at a pharmacy and organisational level.
  • Experience of research activity.
  • A robust understanding of drug expenditure and commissioning and experience in compiling financial reports on drug usage and expenditure.
  • Experience of teaching/ training/ mentoring/ supervision of staff
  • Proven time management skills and an ability to work under pressure in a dynamic situation.
  • The ability to manage own and other's priorities to meet tight deadlines.
