Job summary

The role encompasses a range of responsibilities, listed below. However, the initial task for the Head of Supply Chain will be to facilitate a safe and seamless transition of the materials management service, transitioning it from an outsourced provider to an in-house managed service. This will be followed by the implementation of an ambitious improvement program which will include the unifying the separate materials management teams and operations across the Trust and creating a unified Supply Chain operations function. The Trust is fully committed to this program with executive support from Trust leadership, and is actively working on designing a new and enhanced operating model for Supply Chain supported by a comprehensive improvement plan centered around core enablers of People, Process and Technology. This role provides an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in owning, shaping and delivering this new operating model and creating a patient centric Supply Chain for the Trust.

Main duties of the job

"Our Supply Chain and Materials Management function plays a vital role in our Trust's operations. This team is integral to supporting the delivery of of high-quality, safe patient care. We are entering an exciting phase of development, with significant investments aimed at creating a patient-focused supply chain to meet the needs of our clinicians and patients. Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK's leading heart and lung hospital, delivering care to more than 50,000 patients a year in its new state-of-the-art hospital in Cambridge. We perform the most heart and/or lung transplants in the UK and carried out the UK's first successful heart transplant in 1979. Qualifications

Essential

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in relevant supply chain discipline or equivalent extensive knowledge and understanding gained through supply chain experience at a senior level.
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through post-graduate courses and experience to masters equivalent level plus in-depth managerial, financial, and strategic knowledge
  • In depth specialist knowledge and understanding of logistics and supply chain management practice at the strategic and operational levels, in a variety of sectors.

Desirable

  • Chartered Fellow or Member of relevant professional body (CILT, CIPS, CMI).
  • MSP, Prince 2 or other recognised programme or project management qualification.
  • Continuous improvement certification e.g., Lean, Six Sigma.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of success and achievement in various strategic, senior roles.
  • Previous experience of leading and managing a supply chain function within a large and complex organisation, including budget responsibility.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use and development of supply chain information management systems.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to forge effective professional relationships at all levels.
  • Experience in managing performance review, promotion readiness and performance concern processes.
  • Ability to remain tactful and diplomatic and communicate effectively with stakeholders even when under pressure
  • Ability to manage complex and unpredictable work demands.

  • Previously worked in an NHS, Public or Private Sector supply chain management environment.
  • Understanding of the NHS financial / business models, processes, and markets.
  • Experience of managing outsourcing and outsourced contracts (3PL/4PL) and transitioning activity to outsource / inhouse.
  • Experience and knowledge of innovative supply chain practices from a variety of industries and adapt them to the public sector context.
  • Demonstrated success in optimising team performance, fostering collaboration, and ensuring a seamless integration process while achieving desired outcomes.
