Job summary

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow post available from August 2024 in Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) Surgery. The post is available for a period of one year.

Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge United Kingdom is the sole provider for pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) surgery in the United Kingdom and is one of the largest volume centres in the world, performing up to 200 cases per year. We have the second largest series of PEA surgery in the world behind UCSD in San Diego. This is a national service commissioned by the Department of Health in 1997 and has matured in the last two decades into a premier centre for treating patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease.

This is recognized as the only formal PEA surgery fellowship programme of its kind and is currently in its 5th year having trained surgeons from Singapore, India, US and Australia.

Royal Papworth Hospital is the largest cardiothoracic centre in the UK with over 2000 cardiac surgical procedures performed per year. We provide local cardiothoracic services for the Eastern region and also specialist national services including cardiothoracic transplantation, ventricular assist devices, pulmonary endarterectomy and ECMO. Papworth's cardiology services include primary angioplasty, structural intervention, pacing and electrophysiology, imaging and heart failure

Main duties of the job

*To participate fully in all aspects of PEA programme including attending PEA operating theatre, attend pulmonary vascular disease unit (PVDU) weekly multi-disciplinary meeting, peri-operative care of PEA patients (surgery and critical care), PEA outpatient clinic and PVDU mortality and morbidity meetings.

*To maintain the necessary records of training/logbook and to participate in the formal assessment as agreed with educational supervisor at the commencement of post.

*To attend all relevant clinical and educational meetings.

*To undertake such other duties such as audit information or other administrative or organisational duties as required by the consultants.

*To participate in the training and education of medical students, junior medical staff, and non-medical staff.

*To provide a professional role model for more junior medical staff, and provide guidance and support, particularly during the out of hours period.

*To ensure that all records are accurately maintained, and appropriate deadlines met.

*To contribute to the smooth running of the PEA programme and support developments in practice within the directorate.

*To contribute to the audit programme of the department as directed.

*To observe the terms and conditions identified included with the training programme.

*To observe the Trusts policies and procedures, and clinical protocols
