Job summary

This fellowship post in the Cardiothoracic Transplant Unit at Royal Papworth Hospital provides an opportunity for a respiratory physician to receive sub-specialty training in the management of advanced respiratory failure and cardiothoracic transplantation.

The post-holder will work with the three existing consultant lung transplant physicians and one Deanery rotating respiratory trainee as part of the wider transplant team. The post will provide experience and training in outpatient and ward based medical care to respiratory failure and transplant patients, and advice whilst they are in the intensive care area.

The post-holder will develop expertise in assessment of ambulatory patients with advanced respiratory failure, including selection of candidates for lung and multi-organ transplantation, inotropic and ECMO support. The post-holder will gain experience in the management of post-transplant patients, including use of immunosuppressive therapy and will learn how to perform transbronchial biopsies and other endobronchial interventions. There will be the opportunity to develop research interests, perform audit and experience another respiratory sub-specialty interest outside of transplantation.

Main duties of the job

1.Management of patient care under the direction of the Consultants in the specialty.

2.To have read understand and abide by the clinical protocols in the respective specialties.

3.Completion of accurate records, such as patients, notes and discharge summaries.

4.Attendance at clinics, bronchoscopy sessions, ward rounds and clinical meetings as required.

5.Attending and actively participating in ward rounds.

6.Providing advice for external medical teams and patients in the community.

7.Seeking advice or assistance from senior colleagues as required according to level of skills, and knowledge.

8.Undertaking procedures which will be directly or indirectly supervised.

9.Participation in clinical audit and maintaining medical audit records.

10.Participation in regular timetabled teaching of other junior medical staff, undergraduate students and non-medical staff.

11.Participation in clinical and/or laboratory research of the unit as required by the consultant staff.

12.Adherence to the clinical protocols of the specialty/hospital and to support developments/practices and new ways of working for the efficient and effective delivery of patient care.

13.Participation in training activities, maintaining log/ portfolio and personal development plan.

14.Attendance at mandatory training.
