Job summary

The Clinical Research Nurse/Clinical Trial Co-ordinator will work closely with investigators, other research staff and clinical colleagues to effectively coordinate research studies conducted at Royal Papworth Hospital, contributing to robust, high-quality outputs and a safe, positive research experience for participants.

The Clinical Research Nurse/ Clinical Trial Co-ordinator will assist in setting up trials, recruiting patients, coordinating data collection and arranging assessments and follow up episodes specified by the protocol. They will ensure that specified milestones are achieved on time and demonstrate that high quality data is being collected and that the trial is being conducted according to the ethically approved protocol and ICH-GCP standards.

The post holder will work across both the new Royal Papworth Hospital site and Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI), working with senior colleagues to ensure the safe conduct of clinical trials across both sites.

The role incorporates encompasses administrative, clinical and sample-handling responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

Be the point of contact regarding specified research trials and clinical audit for trial patients and staff at RPH;

Obtain (in association with the senior colleagues) ethical, regulatory and trust approvals;

Liaise with investigators, research staff, R&D staff, internal departments and staff at RPH in respect of the study;

Assist in setting up and monitoring the progress of the trial;

Undertake research according to agreed research governance standards;

Coordinate the work of the clinical research assistants in conjunction with the senior colleagues, providing them with ongoing support;

Coordinate the collection of clinical and health related quality of life data;

Assist in monitoring to ensure that the trial is being conducted according to the approved management protocol, is of high quality and accurate data is being collected;

Recruit and consent suitable patients to the trial at Papworth;

Interview trial patients at Papworth at designated time points using health related quality of life questionnaires;

Assist in assessment and follow up episodes for trial patients at Papworth at designated time points;

Book all necessary tests and investigations, sending appointment letters to patients and ensuring tests are performed at the scheduled times, arranging accommodation and travel as necessary;

Collect and assist with processing of biological samples

  • Degree in a relevant science or health care subject or;
  • Experience in either clinical research or clinical audit at a minimum of NHS Band 4 or above.

  • NMC registered nurse

  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Computer literacy with demonstrable experience of Microsoft Windows
  • Excellent accuracy and the ability to pay close attention to detail in written and electronic communication and information storage
  • Ability to communicate complex or sensitive information to colleagues, patients or relatives
  • Ability to plan and organise own work and motivate others
