Job summary

The post is suitable for intensivists wishing to enhance their specialist experience in all aspects of adult cardiothoracic critical care, including transplantation, mechanical assist devices, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, focus ultrasound examinations and transthoracic echocardiography (TOE). Applicants will be expected to have completed or be within two years of completing specialist training in their parent specialty.

Specialist Registrars currently enrolled in a UK training programme who wish to retain their National Training Number (NTN) whilst at Royal Papworth, should discuss this 'out-of-programme-experience' (OOPE) with their Programme Director. Those not currently in a UK training programme are being appointed as a Senior Clinical Fellow. Applicants should be aware that time spent in a Trust appointed post may not be counted towards the award of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Prospective approval for up to one year can normally be sought from the Royal College of Physicians when a numbered post has been obtained following such an appointment. Overseas candidates are advised to check the latest GMC requirements for registration, including English language skills.

This post is part of a dedicated team of 16 junior doctors working in critical care. The wider critical care team also includes junior doctors who are completing training in cardiothoracic critical care (separate fellowship programme) who work with the critical care team

Main duties of the job

To participate fully in the delivery of critical care services, research, and training and educational programmes;

To maintain a logbook and appropriate records of progress;

To participate in regular performance reviews;

To provide an out of hours' service;

The "ICU" Anaesthetic Specialist Registrar (Resident) and 'ICU Fellow' will provide immediate support for the critical care areas and emergency resuscitation support for the entire hospital;

The daytime ICU cover is provided by 2 ICU consultants along with 2 ICU fellows, 1 Anaesthetic fellow/Registrar and 2 foundation doctors. During the night 1 senior ICU fellow one IMT/FY2 doctor plus Anaesthetics registrar

To complete accurate records, such as patient notes and medical audit records;

Participation in teaching of junior medical staff, undergraduate students and other non-medical staff as required by the hospital;

Participation in clinical audit activities as directed by the consultant Intensivists;

To adhere to the hospital and departmental policy for the booking and taking of leave;

The Department is actively involved in both basic and clinical research. Encouragement is given to participate in on-going research projects;

Trainees will be required to observe all hospital policies and procedures, and appropriate clinical procedures.
