Job summary

Yorkshire Air Ambulance is looking for highly motivated consultants with excellent technical and non-technical skills to join its existing group of HEMS doctors as part of a stepwise expansion in doctor-led pre hospital critical care for the people of Yorkshire.

YAS is the statutory ambulance service for Yorkshire providing 999, NHS 111, and non-emergency patient transport services. The trust provides clinical staffing, clinical governance and leadership for the partnership and is responsible for all CQC regulated activities.

Ideally applicants will be able to fit in to a slot on the existing YAA Doctor rota, by contributing one 12h shift 0730-1930 per fortnight and 2 x 12h weekend shifts 1:11.The weekend shifts are 0900-2100 at Nostell. With the addition of 4 clinical governance days and a day of flight safety training, this working pattern equates to 2.5 programmed activities per week. All but the Fire and CRM training can be conducted while on shift. However, applications are encouraged from doctors who could not, at present, fit in to this working pattern or number of programmed activities.

Successful applicants will have a secondment contract with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and will be paid via their substantive employer / base hospital trust. Please note there is no fixed time period for the secondment.

Main duties of the job

To deliver a high standard of pre-hospital emergency care across a full range of trauma and medical presentations in a mixed urban / rural operational area, to include the provision of pre hospital emergency anaesthesia.

Working seamlessly as one clinical unit with the YAA paramedic team, pilots, and technical crew members, and to positively contribute to their education and development.

Maintain aviation currencies and competencies. Including, but not restricted to: Triennial fire and emergency exits training, biennial dangerous goods training, annual crew resource management (CRM) training and an annual aviation refresher/line-training day. IAW YAA Operations Manual.The above is vital for ensuring safe operations in and around the helicopter.

Working closely on scene with colleagues from Yorkshire Ambulance Service and other emergency services

To provide evidence-based care and best practice, in line with YAA clinical and operational standard operating procedures

To comprehensively and accurately document all clinical care and contribute to routine audit of cases and outcomes.

To work closely with the YAA medical director, YAA Clinical Governance Manager and YAA Clinical Operations Manager and their respective teams

About us

Successful applicants will join new Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) Medical Director Stuart Reid, Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) paramedics and the YAA operations team both in providing expert clinical care across helicopter and rapid response car platforms, but also to play an important role in service development in a range of areas with the aim of ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. The posts will be funded by the YAA but hosted by YAS via secondment agreement from their current employer.

The YAS/YAA Partnership is a partnership between the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance jointly providing Helicopter Emergency Medical Services to the population of Yorkshire and beyond.
