Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a speech and language therapist to work in specialist adult mental health services (working age adults and Older Peoples Services) in Leeds and York Partnership Foundation NHS Trust. The role would provide dysphagia and communication assessments and interventions to adults who have a mental health condition and are in an in-patient setting. Intervention includes individual and group sessions and is an area of development working inclusively with service users and with the MDT.

The position will be based within both the rehabilitation and recovery services and The Mount, where there is the highest level of need. The rehabilitation and recovery service works with adults who have a severe and enduring mental illness and consists of three in-patient wards based in the community, as well as a community transitional rehabilitation team. The Mount has 4 inpatient wards for Older People with acute mental health needs including dementia. Both services has an effective and dynamic multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, nurses, healthy living advisors and support staff.

The role will be operationally responsible to operational management across both services and clinically responsible to the Principle Speech and Language Therapist and Allied Health Professional Lead.

Main duties of the job

This role would provide the opportunity to develop your clinical skills with this patient group. The rehabilitation and recovery services are currently developing a new Complex Psychosis Pathway and you will have the opportunity to be involved in this exciting service development.

To utilise your core speech and language therapy skills to provide high quality speech and language therapy interventions to working age adults with a mental illness, and to older persons unit (mental illness and dementia)

  • To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team offering a comprehensive service to service users who require specialist health interventions.
  • To participate in the ongoing development and maintenance of quality services, ensuring ongoing commitment to the care programme approach, managing complex care directly, and indirectly eg training staff in strategies to support communication and/or safer swallowing.
  • To participate in the education and supervision of a range of students.
  • To maintain clear links with your speech and language therapy structures, Principal SLT and your AHP lead within the Trust.
  • Support the speech and language therapy team development, promoting SLT role within multidisciplinary team and alerting managers to areas of SLT need and service development
  • Adherence to RCSLT speech and language therapy standards and codes of practice
