Job summary

Ward 5, located at the Newsam Centre in Leeds, is a 17 bedded high intensity rehabilitation service that delivers rehabilitation and recovery to male service users with enduring mental illness. The service provides a holistic, psychologically-informed approach to support service users in developing their life skills, independence and hope for the future in a way that is meaningful to them, in the least restrictive way possible, with a focus on individual strengths.

We are looking to recruit a Band 5 Occupational Therapist who is compassionate, creative, and flexible in their approach to delivering individualised, person-centred care. The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of the Care Programme Approach, Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, person-centred care-planning and complex risk assessment/management. They will demonstrate excellent organisational skills and a commitment to working collaboratively with others. You will value continuing professional development and actively engage in clinical supervision.

Main duties of the job

If successful, you will be encouraged and supported to develop your own specialist skills, knowledge and competence through participation, reflection, supervision and training, with a strong focus on service improvement and individual professional development planning. The service is currently undergoing exciting development and transformation, and we would particularly welcome applications from those who hold additional skills in recovery-focused psychological interventions, or who wish to acquire and develop these skills.

You will provide functional assessments and interventions for service users, involving their relevant others, to promote recovery. You will be able promote the unique role of the Occupational Therapist whilst also sharing generic responsibilities that are part of inpatient working. You will have leadership qualities and will be working closely with other team members to support the continuous development of therapeutic practice within the service.

  • Assess and treat patients, providing holistic Occupational Therapy intervention
  • Develop Occupational Therapy treatment plans, demonstrating clear clinical reasoning and goal setting
  • Support clinical supervision of Therapy Assistants, Students and Preceptees
  • Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team
    • Manage a caseload of patients independently

You will be required to work a shift pattern (not including nights) across seven days.
