Job summary

As part of the new Speech and language therapy mental health team the post-holder will provide a specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to mental health service users. Ideally you will have experience either with older adults with mental health problems, or children and young people. But you will contribute to meeting the needs of mental health service users across the organisation and supporting the training and development of junior staff, deputising for the principal SLT as required. This is an exciting opportunity to help us develop the SaLT service for people with mental health conditions and to develop your own expert skills in communication and dysphagia approaches. You will have great support from our growing community of SaLTs here in Leeds as we work together to establish an innovative SaLT service across mental health services in this vibrant city.

Main duties of the job

You will be an experienced speech and language therapist, with dysphagia competencies and be able to work effectively and independently within multi-disciplinary settings.

Support will be provided by the SLT forum, principal SLT and AHP leads, as well as the older peoples services team.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will predominately provide a specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to older adults with mental health problems. They will work as part of several Multi-Disciplinary Teams meeting the range of needs of service users. In addition they will work as part of the Speech and Language therapy team to provide clinical input as required across mental health services as identified by the principle Speech and Language therapist.

The post holder will liaise with and respond to the training needs of all appropriate staff groups, developing specialist training programmes. They will offer services to service users with mental health problems who have communication and eating and drinking difficulties. The post-holder will support registered and non-registered staff allocated to implement the specialized plans of care developed to support communication plans and support safe eating and drinking.
