Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a newly formed service which will provide improved care for veterans in the North of England.

Armed forces veterans who need mental health support will be able to access a new streamlined service from 1 April 2023.

NHS veterans' mental health services are being brought together under one name; Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, to make it easier and more accessible to people who need help.

Op COURAGE offers a range of specialist support and treatment for members of the armed forces community. This includes:

  • helping to recognise and treat early signs of mental health problems, as well as more advanced mental health conditions and psychological trauma,
  • providing support and treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use,
  • liaising with charities and local organisations to support wider health and wellbeing, such as help with housing, relationships, finances and employment,
  • referring to other NHS services, where needed, and
  • recognising that family may also need help and care and supporting them to access this

The service operates 8am-8pm over 7 days per week, and has a rotating shift pattern.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly motivated senior mental health practitioner (Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist) to work in our Enhanced Team, based at either Vermont House Washington or Arundel House Burnley. This may be the ideal post for you.

Op COURAGE offers a range of support and treatment, including:

  • triage, assessment, stabilisation interventions, social and peer support and psychological therapy.
  • supporting with intensive emergency care and treatment for veterans in a crisis
  • helping Veterans to access and engage with other NHS mental health services

You will be required to support veterans in crisis, alongside local crisis services across organisations. You will have excellent communication, organisational and clinical reasoning skills, as well as the ability to travel across the geographical region of the service.

You will support assessments, psychological formulation, risk management and interventions for veterans, working with local services to support them to deliver effective care for veterans experiencing crisis and receiving inpatient care.

You will be required provide triage and assessment to veterans with mental health difficulties, as well as providing stabilisation interventions within case management.

This is a hybrid post, with some working from base and some working from home. The service is an extended-hours, 7-day provision and the role involves shift work across 7 days.

Other delivery partners are Pennine Healthcare NHS Trust, Tees, Esk & Wear Valley NHS Trust, Humber NHS Trust, Combat Stress and Walking with the Wounded.

You will receive training, support and supervision, with a strong emphasis on personal and professional development. This role is community based and it is essential that you have a full UK driving licence and use of a car.
