Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a newly formed service which will provide improved care for veterans in the North of England.

Armed forces veterans who need mental health support will be able to access a new streamlined service from 1 April 2023.

NHS veterans' mental health services are being brought together under one name; Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, to make it easier and more accessible to people who need help.

Op COURAGE offers a range of specialist support and treatment for members of the armed forces community. This includes:

  • helping to recognise and treat early signs of mental health problems, as well as more advanced mental health conditions and psychological trauma,
  • providing support and treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use,
  • liaising with charities and local organisations to support wider health and wellbeing, such as help with housing, relationships, finances and employment,
  • referring to other NHS services, where needed, and
  • recognising that family may also need help and care and supporting them to access this.

LYPFT will operate the core pathway team within the West and South Yorkshire area. The service will be part of a Provider Collaborative with Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Trust as the Lead Provider. Other delivery partners are Pennine Healthcare NHS Trust, Tees, Esk & Wear Valley NHS Trust, Humber NHS Trust, Combat Stress and Walking with the Wounded.

Main duties of the job

OpCourage operates across the whole of the North of England and is a multi-disciplinary team which includes: Mental Health Practitioners, Psychology, Psychiatry, Liaison & Support Officers. The team provide liaison, advice and a support service for local mental health teams, the Veteran and their family. The model involves ensuring Veterans are empowered to access services for health and social support via the Veteran Liaison & Support Officers (provided by Walking with the Wounded).

The service also provides therapies for veterans experiencing psychological trauma (such as post-traumatic stress disorder) alongside other treatments and advice, including help with substance misuse, physical health, employment, accommodation, relationships and finance.

We need a highly motivated and experienced Clinical Psychologist/Psychological Therapist to join this service, working predominantly in either Leeds, Bury or the North East of England. You will work within a consultation role, providing supervision, support and advice to the clinical team supporting veterans presenting in crisis and/or when admitted to a mental health inpatient setting, as well as providing therapy to armed forces veterans within the pathway.

You will also provide assessment, formulation and direct one-to-one psychological interventions to veterans within the pathway. Supporting the team to deliver excellence to meet the unique needs of the veteran population are key aspects of this service and the post involves contributing towards research, evaluation and service development.

This role involves some travel across a large geographical region supporting the implementation of a coherent and clinical model. We view the regional aspect of this role as an opportunity to enhance and broaden your professional development, through an outward facing and responsive service in different communities and to learn and share psychology practice and establish robust networks.

An experienced Clinical/Counselling Psychologist or Psychotherapist/CBT Therapist you should have experience of working with complex trauma and with a wide variety of clients across care settings. Experience of working with veterans and veteran services is highly desired.
