Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to become the Senior Therapy Lead for the Leeds and West Yorkshire ME/CFS Outpatient Service based at the Newsam Centre, Seacroft Hospital. The Leeds & West Yorkshire ME/CFS Service is one of the largest and longest established in the country and has a strong focus on multidisciplinary working to deliver expert assessment, formulation and treatment to patients referred to the service. The team are keen to recruit an experienced practitioner and leader to support the therapy team and MDT in providing responsive individualised treatment to patients with persistent fatigue and ME/CFS.

As Senior Therapy Lead you will have responsibility for the ongoing development of the service and therapy staff. As Senior Therapy Lead you will act as a positive role model to the team and provide evidenced based treatment to an identified caseload of patients with a wide range of level of function and complexity. The Therapy Lead will ensure timely and consistent responses to referrers and external enquiries regarding the service and patient group. Ideally the candidate has an interest in external communications and digital service delivery

Main duties of the job

To provide biopsychosocial assessments and evidenced based treatment to patients referred to the service

To triage referrals into the service ensuring thorough checking of information provided for suitability, and provide advice and sign posting for those deemed not appropriate for the team

To provide robust clinical supervision to the therapy team

To support the therapy team in the development of robust clinical formulations and development of treatment plans

To have overall responsibility for the services modular group programme ensuring expert delivery and ongoing development of the group programme

To work with the CTM on implementing and reviewing the services work plan and to lead on service development initiatives.

Be aware of any major national developments, research, and the wider context for understanding the needs of this patient group.

Represent the team at the AHP forum and support professional development.

Promote clinical governance principles.

Promote service user and carer involvement in service development and co-production where possible.

To understand occupational performance and strategies for improving function working with more severely affected patients.

To lead on the delivery of the severely affected pathway working with disability and impairment in community settings where necessary.

To utilise therapeutic skills to promote behaviour change and restoration of function

To have an interest and promote the use and reporting of outcome measures

  • The post holder will have significant experience of working within the specialism and will take on the assessment and treatment of a cohort of individuals with complex presentations or those who are severely affected
  • The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the team, working in partnership with other teams in the service line, to ensure the team is consistently providing high quality, evidence-based care
  • The post holder will work with the Consultant, the Clinical Operations Manager, Clinical Team Manager and Head of Operations in ensuring the standards achieved across the service are in accordance with those set within Liaison Psychiatry and LYPFT, linking into existing clinical governance structures
  • The post holder will act as an information resource for those inside and outside of the team
  • The post holder will be responsible for delivering training to team members as well as to teams outside of the service, as required

The Senior Therapy Lead will be able to:

  • Work as a member of the Leeds and West Yorkshire ME/CFS Service, as a senior autonomous, practitioner; carrying out assessments and interventions for patients referred to the Service
  • Demonstrate expertise in the specialist assessment of complex patients. They will utilise expertise in the assessment of psychological, social, functional, spiritual and risk factors to develop, in collaboration with the patient, a comprehensive formulation of their presentation
  • Ensure that this clear formulation is utilised effectively to develop a treatment plan and identify the appropriate care pathway. Communicating clearly with the referrer and patient the outcome of the assessment. Providing advice on alternative treatment options if further input from the service is not appropriate, as required
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based interventions for a caseload of service users with complex presentations; working in collaboration with the service user and other colleagues, as required
  • Take a lead role in screening referrals received into the service whilst supporting and educating team members to undertake this role, as required
  • Provide ad hoc and regular planned clinical supervision and guidance to team members (either on 1:1 or group basis). This will include providing supervision on service acceptance and suitability criteria and support decision making at key points throughout the care pathway, including:
  1. Facilitating team members to develop a robust clinical formulation following the initial assessment.
  2. Utilising the clinical formulation to lead discussion with clinicians, about their clinical decision making and proposed management/action plans (ranging from advice on other more appropriate services to the most suitable care pathway within the service).
  3. Providing ongoing caseload management; ensuring best practice and promoting clinicians independence in capacity and demand management.
  4. Leading discussions on case presentations, including complex presentations seen in the service, with the emphasis on learning and team development
  • To work along with other senior colleagues, to support and strengthen the provision of advice, support and education to relatives, carers, and other health care professionals regarding the condition.
  • To work in collaboration with the Clinical Lead for Liaison Psychiatry, the Clinical Operations Manager, Clinical Team Manager and Head of Operations to positively promote and encourage compliance with Trustwide key performance indicators.
