Job summary

This post provides an excellent opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist who is interested in the specialist area of transgender voice. We are looking for an enthusiastic and pro-active Speech and Language Therapist to work in the field of voice and communication therapy for trans and non-binary people.

The speech and language therapy role has been established within the team since 2017 and this is an exciting opportunity to work alongside an experienced Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist and to develop skills within this area. There will be opportunities for CPD and access to a diverse range of professional development opportunities within the Trust.

The suitable applicant will have experience of working in the field of voice and ideally have some experience of transgender voice work. Any experience of adult dysfluency work will also be of benefit. The suitable applicant must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The caseload may also include people with autism and learning difficulties and you will need to be flexible in your therapeutic approach to work alongside people with neurodiversity. Training and supervision will be provided, but fast-paced learning will be expected.

Main duties of the job

This specialist post is an exciting opportunity to assess and provide intervention to trans and gender diverse service users who wish to find their authentic voice, which is congruent with their gender.

You will have your own caseload and provide specialist assessment and intervention in all areas of voice, including posture, breath, pitch, resonance, intonation, and voice quality. Therapy will be carried out in both individual and group sessions. The Speech Therapy team's expert interventions in voice and communication therapy are drawn from a combined evidence base of clinical voice disorders, vocal practitioner pedagogy and psychological approaches, which support a vocal identity exploration and change process.

You will be responsible for liaising with the MDT and GPs as required. You will also be required to prioritise and organise your own workload by using your own professional and clinical judgement, recognising the boundaries of your knowledge and seeking advice from senior staff members where appropriate.

The suitable applicant must have excellent communication skills and the ability to develop professional and positive relationships with team members and service users.
