Using the skills of a senior radiographer lead and manage the Plain Film X-Ray Service offered by the Imaging Department.

• Work closely with the Emergency Department to maintain and improve theservice and continue to meet targets. Foster relationships with other clinical teams to ensure good communication and a multidisciplinary approach.

Actively promote and develop the radiography service, incorporating technical advances to advanced practice, improve diagnostic techniques, appropriate skill mix and improve patient pathways. Organise and participate in staff appraisal and personal development planning.

Monitor and manage radiographers and assistants absence, leave and hours worked, ensuring the application of Trust and departmental policies and that mandatory courses are attended.

Deal with disciplinary issues, formal and informal complaints concerning the Plain Film Imaging Department.

Manage Health and Safety for own area, ensuring all appropriate Risk Assessments are completed, documented and discussed with the Head of Imaging.

Ensure that regular stock control is carried out, and department has materials to provide day to day service

Manage and participate in the system for evaluation and prioritisation of Plain Film X-Ray referrals, authorising or rejecting as appropriate. Advise on patient preparation. Deal with inappropriate requests or inadequate information informing referrer the request is cancelled, document following department policy.Develop monitoring and documentation system for all requests that fail the justification process.

Take responsibility for resolving problems with appointing patients within existing resources.

Manage waiting lists in conjunction with senior departmental management.

Develop and organise quality audit programme to include

b) Customer satisfaction survey

c) DNA rates

d) Cancelled lists

e) Patient information and communications

f) Patient environment

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain clinical skills by independently undertaking a wide variety of Plain Film X-Ray examinations and be responsible for running own clinical lists. Work in a potentially pressurised environment, managing unpredictable demands from clinicians and patients.

Adhere to the principles of informed consent by means of clear explanations to patients, including risks, benefits, accuracy and limitations of examinations.

Ensure optimum patient follow-up commensurate with exam findings i.e. advise patients of routine systems for obtaining results, advise when further investigations or tertiary referral are needed, and arrange hospital admission or expedite outpatient appointments where necessary.

Where appropriate, convey exam results to patients and their partners/relatives in a manner which they can understand and which minimises distress. E.g. advise patient or their carer that an examination does not have negative findings (e.g. detection of cancer) and provide appropriate advice and support.

Devise appropriate strategies to convey complex issues to patients, and those responsible for them, who may have communication problems, e.g. learning difficulties, physical impairment and minors.

Communicate examination results to a range of referrers both verbally, in writing, and/or electronically as considered appropriate.

Provide expert advice to a range of healthcare professionals.

Carry out the duties of a Radiation Protection Supervisor and assist the RPA with the compiling and writing the Trusts Magnet Safety Policy, Radiation Protection policy, inclusive of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R 2024) and Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR17) and ensure staff and visitor such as engineers comply with the Local Rules.

Assist in the maintenance and review of the Departments policies and procedures relating to radiation protection and service delivery which impact across the Trust.

Take responsibility for the use and care of a wide range of Plain Film X-Ray Equipment. Organise equipment service, repair and QA.

Take responsibility for recognising inadequacies in existing equipment and formulating business plans for replacement or additional purchases. Organise and participate in the evaluation and selection of application-specific equipment.

Demonstrate competence in IT systems operating in the Trust, and use of the Internet, in order to maintain accurate data entry, patient information acquisition, report generation, communication and access to research data.

Provide specialist practical and theoretical training in Plain Film X-Ray procedures, to qualified and undergraduate radiographic staff undertaking various recognised qualifications.

Supervise and undertake assessments of trainees, finally making judgements about competence to practice independently when their findings may affect patient management. Be accountable for work carried out under your supervision.

Assist in the training of less experienced radiographers in areas of advanced practice. Provide support and mentorship to radiographic practitioners from all disciplines.

Participate in the training of Radiographic Assistants.

Be accountable for own professional activities, involving a high degree of autonomy, within the limits of personal competence.

Engage in CPD as per the requirements of professional code of conduct, and undertake further post - graduate specialist training to fulfil the needs of a developing service. Facilitate the CPD requirements of the Plain Film X-Ray team.

Work within and contribute to evidence-based protocols and guidelines. When inadequacies in these are identified, take remedial action.

Take a lead role in audit and departmental research.

Organise and contribute to the content and delivery of patient information material.

Take responsibility for providing a safe working environment for both staff and patients. Evaluate, report, and act on perceived risk in accordance with Trust policy.

Have an understanding of ergonomic principles related to radiography and promote the same to minimise the risk of ill health in yourself and others.

Information Governance is the responsibility of all Trust staff and as such you will be required to ensure you comply with good IG practice.

Essential

• Having the knowledge and experience necessary to lead our Plain Film X-Ray Service.

Desirable

• Minimum 5 Years Experience as a Radiographer specialising in Plain Film.
